Hybrid sunflowers
Anybody had any luck planting mycogens? 8f300CL's in particular
Re: Hybrid sunflowers
I like the black oil hybrids. You do not have to plant a Clearfield type to get good results.

Are the peredoviks hybrids, Jon?

Re: Hybrid sunflowers
I am not sure what the pedigree is on peredovick sunflowers, but they are not hybrid. I have seen where peredovicks performed very well and compared closely with the black oil hybrids on certain soil types. If it was going to be a one and done type hunt or if you were just looking for a couple of early weekends of hunting and money for management is a concern, then peredovick will probably work fine. If someone is looking at growing the best sunflowers they can and the area is big enough to where you are just mowing a few strips every couple of weeks so as to prolong dove hunting opportunities over the course of the fall, then I would plant a good black oil hybrid with some quick research on the ones that perform best on the soil type I would be planting into. No data out there or publications that I know of that show where black oil hybrids hold their seed longer, but I have seen it in the variety trials we did a few years back. Top end yield potential is certainly better with the black oil hybrids, but how much yield is enough to offer good dove hunting opportunities? That is why I say peredovicks are fine if the expectations are moderate. The Clearfield technology is great for those farmers in the plains, midwest, and upper midwest because of the weeds they are dealing with. I do not see the advantages here in MS for paying for the technology when our toughest weeds are controlled with preemerge chemicals and postemerge grass applications. I would prefer to plant the black oil hybrid without the Clearfield technology and save my money for other applications (fertilizer, 2nd postemerge spraying, drydown application, etc, etc).

Re: Hybrid sunflowers
I agree. I can't find any hybrids that aren't clearfield and I don't see any advantage to spraying Beyond with the weeds I have.

Re: Hybrid sunflowers
Rob, check with CPS down at Holly Bluff or Rolling Fork, can't remember which of those 2 places has the CPS location. They have always had a good Dyna-Grow hybrid for sale down that way that is not Clearfield. They do a good job of keeping track of a variety or two that works well on their heavier type soins. Any ag dealer can order a bag of something you want. Check out websites for Triumph Seed, Dyna-Grow, Dekalb, Mycogen, etc. Lots of non-Clearfield hybrids out there, just have to get someone to get it here.

Apparently Dekalb does not handle sunflower seed anymore. Sure some company is carrying their lines. Several good possibilities on the websites above....even some 65-75 day sunflowers.

Re: Hybrid sunflowers
Thanks. Does Triumph sell the FTB anymore? I didn't see it on their site.

Re: Hybrid sunflowers
I noticed it was not an FTB bybrid on there as well. Those were small seeds that had fell thru the screens when they were doing their seed cleaning/conditioning apllications. They felt it was a market there for the seed as it was good viable seed just smaller. Guessing they never got enough demand for it to warrant the saving and bagging.

Re: Hybrid sunflowers
That NuSun 306 looks pretty good as far as yield, oil content, and drought tolerance.

Re: Hybrid sunflowers
Think you are right Rob, the 306 looks like one to try. It is short too which I think is good. Shorter ones usually have bigger leaves which lead to canopy quicker which helps with weed control. High yield + their best drought hybrid. Sounds like one to try in the Delta.
