Bryant v Reeves
Saw that Bryant has threatened extra legislative session if Reeves does not allow for Senate vote on Patrol School. Reeves counters that MHP has poor leadership and does not deserve a patrol school.
How did these guys end up being on the opposite end of the spectrum from one another?
Heard Senator Michael Watson this morning stating that he wonders why the Senate even has senators because nothing gets done without Reeves allowing it to happen - he does not allow up and down votes or refers bills he does not like to Nancy Collins' committee to be killed.
There are a lot of odd things going on at the Capitol it appears.
Last year, Reeves would not allow a vote on a DPS proposed bill to protect the personal information of gun permit holders from public records request until the political winds forced him to...now he is claiming in his twitter to be the defender of gun rights against DPS.
For the first time since Reconstruction, the GOP has control of the House, Senate, Lt. Gov and Gov's Office and they are fighting like cats and dogs.
Anyone have an reasonable explanations?

Here is an article on topic...or semi-on-topic from the CL today...

So, is Reeves' position that if allocated the money, that DPS would not actually have a patrol school but would spend it on something else?DPS leaders and Bryant say the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol is short 150 troopers — the worst such shortage in years — with many more eligible to retire. They say some counties are going without trooper coverage on highways, and many troopers are on their own during patrols, with no backup nearby in case of trouble.
Bryant’s threat of special session — one of the only powers the governor has over the Legislature — is aimed at Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves and his GOP leadership. They have questioned spending and management at the Department of Public Safety and its underling Highway Patrol, and whether trooper shortages are because the agency is too top heavy in administration and spends unwisely.
“We repeatedly hear horror stories about one trooper for four counties,” Reeves said. “There are over 500 sworn officers. One for four counties means there are 25 on the road any one time. That’s not a manpower issue. That’s a leadership issue. I hope the governor will address the number of troopers that are on the road.”
Bryant said DPS’ administrative costs are about five percent, not out of line, and “I would put that against any agency in government,” including the Legislature. The agency’s 502 sworn officers includes 102 working for the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, 36 in driver services, 29 in administration and 11 in training. DPS officials recently said there are about 290 troopers on the roads, including command staff.

Well. My Momma always told me that I had to play nice with my friends. And my coaches always taught that as a team, we had to work together. Apparently, those lessons sometimes are missed by politicians.Deltamud77 wrote:Anyone have an reasonable explanations?

Reeves has always been an arrogant, self-centered individual from what I understand from politicians. They say he always makes things look like they are his idea and if not, he won't push them. He is a Democrat........I don't care what party he runs under. We need to get him out of there.

On the Hwy patrol issue, I disagree that there is such a dire situation as is being presented by the Gov. and some radio talk show hosts. If the Hwy patrol
is being poorly managed, I think Reeves should back up that statement with facts and not accuasations. Now, do I think he needs to go.....YUP, I sure do.
He's killing very good bills that would do a lot of good for our state, especially on the education side of things. He needs to go.

I am sure MHP could be run better, but what standard are they being held to? Are there any state agencies that run with total efficiency? Has Tate put forth actual facts as to how much worse they are than any other agency?

I agree, if he thinks it's being ran poorly and is using that as his excuse to withold funding, then he should present facts and not slander people.
He is a true disappointment to many Mississippians.
Lot of good bills have died under his watch.

Re: Bryant v Reeves
I googled Reeves and gun permits and ran across this on another board...
http://www.msgunowners.com/t42126-email ... ate-reeves
I thought that was kind of funny...he is asking supposed gun owners for money to defend the 2nd Amendment. He never mentions where the money will go or how it will be used.
I also wonder who he sent this to - individuals that have donated money to him in the past? Maybe to gun permit holders...but how did he get the permit holder information?

Re: Bryant v Reeves
Here's a little insight for y'all-
Reeves doesn't like the Public Safety Commissioner (Santa Cruz) and told Bryant that until he is out no more money for MHP. ...just a little something I heard this week.

So because of a personal beef, Reeves is going to risk the lives of current troopers and citizens of the state? Nice...that is Obama-like leadership.

Sure looks that way, doesn't it????Deltamud77 wrote:So because of a personal beef, Reeves is going to risk the lives of current troopers and citizens of the state? Nice...that is Obama-like leadership.
I'm sorta glad Tater's real agendas are being exposed, now....gives voters time to make an informed decision, and not re-elect him.

Re: Bryant v Reeves
They are not opening a new school. Why they call it that I don't know. Hwy patrol school is basically a new class of troopers. They put a halt on new classes a while back and now they want a new class to start. That's not much money when you think about it. They project that on 150 students starting out. They project 60-70 to make it through. That counts their patrol car. Their items like service gun, body armor, radio, etc. It also includes half of their salary for that part of year that they are in the class. Not bad when you figure 100,000 on average per student which includes the cost of the vehicle.slew wrote:7 million for hwy patrol school?
