Weekend weather forecast looks good for hunters of cypress brakes. Good luck and let me know how y'all do.

Agree. Have gotten more excited as the week has progressed. Hope y'all wear them out this weekend. I'll give you a call and we can compare notes.

Just curious about what looks good in the forecast for cypress brakes? I would think a freeze would be ideal since cypress brakes tend to be a bit deeper....

Sunshine and good wind. A freeze can certainly be good, too.

It is killing me to be in this office today and tomorrow, but I am trying to make a week of work. Good luck to you, too and please call me to (hopefully) brag!

At least from what I have seen over the years, it seems as if ducks like to hit cypress brakes and the buck brush along the edges of the cypress when it is sunny and windy (especially when a cold front is coming in). Usually very little calling and a handful of decoys spread out in very small groups in open pockets has been the ticket on a number of occasions in the past. Not sure if they feel more secure or just want to get in out of the wind but this just seems to be the case more often than not.

We had a great time with my customers, saw a lot of geese, and got a few shots on the few ducks in the area. Highlight of the trip was that I shot the first Canada goose any of us have ever shot at the brake. One of my guests shot one out of the same group, as well. What made it even better was that I dropped him dead as a hammer with a 20 gauge. :D

Brake Man that gun sure looks at home at Beaver Dam!

I was hunting about 10 miles from brake man Saturday morning. I couldn't find anyone to make the drive with me from Starkville, so I went by myself. I'd never been to this spot before, but I knew it was a cypress brake so I brought my new-to-me Final Attack boat along. Turns out I didn't need the boat but it was good to have since I was alone. One bad step Saturday morning and things could have turned bad real fast.

There weren't many birds flying, but I was able to work in a few groups and intentionally let the hens go. It's not something I usually do, but I'm going to start doing this more often. As a bonus, I got my first goose. If I'd waited 1 minute longer to go retrieve him I'd have had my second goose. The same group circled and crapped on me as I was making the retrieve, but they gained enough altitude as they approached me to get out of range.

The one thing that would have made this solo hunt better, a good dog. He's on the 2 year plan!
