Ask DS: Polaris Ranger
Ask DS: Polaris Ranger
I bought a 2012 Ranger 800 XP from a guy @ work last week. The machine has 100 hours on it and seems to be well taken care of. While riding it this past weekend, I cut it off, and when I got ready to start it up again, it would run for a few seconds and go dead, repeated this twice, and finally started running as it should. This has happened 3 times. Anyone ever had this issue?
Also, the guy I bought it from purchased the extended warranty through the dealer, is the extended warranty transferrable?

Re: Ask DS: Polaris Ranger
Put the premium gas in it. Amazing how well my Ranger started running when I started using the best gas.
Are we gonna get wet?
Re: Ask DS: Polaris Ranger
that bike being fuel injected rules out alot of possible things it could be...I would say bad/old gas maybe? or either something electrical that maybe got wet? hard to diagnose something like that over the internet...

I would run Non-ethanol, not necessarily premium.SWAG wrote:Put the premium gas in it. Amazing how well my Ranger started running when I started using the best gas.

Re: Ask DS: Polaris Ranger
be careful of the extended warranty.
they are transferable only one time, and it cost $50 to have it transferred, and you will have to hound them to get the papers.....
if you bought it from a guy you know. just tell the dealer you are dropping it off for Him.

Probably the fuel pump. Mine wouldn't start after it got hot.
Re: Ask DS: Polaris Ranger
Most likely it is transferable.
Now onto your problem, the 800 rangers are very well know to have fuel pump problems.
There's a fuel pump from the auto parts store that is much cheaper than the one polaris sells, let me see if i can find it.

Re: Ask DS: Polaris Ranger
You can find a number of reasonably priced (compared to oem) inline fuel pumps through Summit racing or Jegs. The key is know what pressure the system needs. Also be aware that many aftermarket fuel pumps are designed for delivering high flow rates for large engines. A pump that is rated for 35 psi at 20 gph will produced higher pressure when operated at 5 gph. This means higher system pressure because the system is not sized for the higher flow or possible damage to the bypass valve due to higher than rated flows.
If the problem is that common, there should be alot of information on the polaris forums. I would start there.

Re: Ask DS: Polaris Ranger
Thanks everyone for the input, i have checked every Polaris forum that I can find and there isn't a whole lot of information on them. What I do know is after reading the posts, it scares the crap out of me for buying this machine. It seems that there are a quite a few issues, but i keep telling myself that these guys prolly have a git-er-done sticker on the tailgate. As far as the warranty goes, the guy i bought it from said he will take it to the dealer for me if need be.

Re: Ask DS: Polaris Ranger
My brothers did this after a week of my borrowing it. He swears it was water in the fuel from the jerry cans I was using. Took it to Brookhaven and it didn't mess up afterwards. I don't know if it was coincidental or not.
Re: Ask DS: Polaris Ranger
I did have to put a fuel pump on mine once, maybe when it was about a year old. No problem since then other than I noticed mine (and other Rangers) did not always idle very well. The premium gas fixed the problem. It idles great and really responds quicker. For sure non-ethanol gas would be a plus I believe, but the higher octane of premium certainly did improve the performance. The price difference from regular to premium is no big thing when you consider how little gas is used. We may burn 3-5 gallons a week at during hunting season.
Are we gonna get wet?
Re: Ask DS: Polaris Ranger
I know it is a different machine but I was having the exact same problem with my Grizzly 700EFI. New spark plug and problem was solved.

Re: Ask DS: Polaris Ranger
We have been through multiple fuel pumps on our 800 at work. It will run good for a little while and then start doing what you're talking about when it's hot. The aftermarket fuel pump might be the fix to that. Got Gear keeps replacing it with the stocker and we keep having the same problem.

Get on www.prcforum.com
Search for the problem on there. There is more information on that site related to Polaris Rangers than any other. I would trust some of the guys on that site way before I would trust any Got Gear so-called mechanic.

Never. Again. Polaris. That's my new life rule, and I'm sticking to it. After all, they stuck it to me.
