fighting bayou
This "fighting bayou" rings a bell. It may not be the place I'm thinking about but I bet it's close. In the early 80's (I wasn't even old enough to drive)I used to hunt a place on a big farm called PD Plantation. My Dad used to drive me down there during the school holidays and leave me with my cousin until after the 1st. We were both just little kids but I remember it well. They had a big fine clubhouse and called it Big Mallard hunting club. For a 12 year old hillbilly it was the most fun place you could spend your xmas vacation. We would duck hunt in the mornings then rabbit hunt and go duck hunting again in the afternoon. My cousins Dad managed the farm back then so we had the run of the place. Some of my best memories are from this time. Best I can remember it was southeast of Ruleville. I quit going when the guy lost the farm in a foreclosure and never knew what happened to it. Do any of you guys know what I'm talking about?

Hey Timberjack,
You have remembered correctly. The old Big Mallard clubhouse is now used for the residence for the caretaker. The club is now called Fighting Bayou and is located on Big Mallard Road. They built a new(and expensive) clubhouse about three years ago. The hunting there now is even better than it was when you were there, since it is managed for ducks with around 350 acres planted in corn and milo and left unharvested and flooded for the ducks. To clarify some previous posts on the subject, it is 3100 acres consisting of farmland, wrp/crp land and hardwoods. Usually something over 2,000 acres are flooded but this year with all the floods nearly all of it is flooded. The hunting there again this year is among some of the best and most consistent in the Southeast. They do some field hunting, but most of the hunting is done in the woods. If there is anything better than their hunting it would have to be the buffet breakfast after the hunt. There are no memberships, only 9 stockholders holding ten shares. No stock is for sale but if it was a share would be worth over a million bucks. By the way, was I.D. your cousin that managed the farm when you visited in the 80's?

I.D. is my uncle, his son Dee is my first cousin. That was one fine place to hunt. I remember they had two tracts of timber that they hunted, the big woods and the little woods. The little woods had a great big blind with heaters and stoves in it and could easily handle 8 shooters. The big woods had a bunch of little blinds scattered all over it with a canal cut from the clubhouse to the woods so all a fellow had to do was walk out the back door, get in his boat and go hunting. Those ditches ran all over those woods to the different blinds. They had a lady at the clubhouse that cooked some mighty fine meals and a guy that drove all over that property to scare the ducks up after you got to your blind. I didn't realize at the time how good we had it. I killed my first duck there, a drake greenwing. P.L. Blake had the place then but I think he lost it and I don't see ID or Dee much anymore and didn't know what happened to it.

It's still much the same except all the blinds have been removed from both sets of woods. You should call your cousin Sam and see if he can arrange a hunt for you.

WHAT ABOUT A PLACE CALLED "SCARED cheeseburger BREAK" YOU GUYS KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS
SPOT?
SPOT?

Scared cheeseburger Brake is approximately 2 miles northeast of Fighting Bayou, and it's an excellent area for ducks. Under normal conditions, it's covered up with big ducks and geese all season long and provides excellent field and brake hunting.

Not real good around fighting bayou. i have a place next to it and do not have a single duck. there are very few in the area. maybe the cold this week will help.
I use to hunt there myself when i was a little boy. my father knew I.D. and P.L. Blake when they had it. it is a wonderful place.

Fighting bayou has been around a long time. It has flooded timber in the middle and is surrounded by lots! of food. I do not remember the amount of land but I do know it is very expensive! I was talking to a class mate last night and he said that he rode by there yesterday and that is the only place in the delta at this time with ducks. I know this because I grew up around there and hunted the area.

Hey SoftCall,
I've been around even before they were at
Big Mallard. Avery was one of my good friends. He passed away back in the spring. I sure miss him especially this time of year. I live close enough to F.B. to hear the shooting. They have been killing ducks but even thier duck numbers are off from past years.

Just wondering if anyone on this forum named David has been in touch with my friend Mark L here in Nashville. We'll be hunting in the Cleveland and Grenada area starting sun thru wednesday. Supposedly we have access to a spot adjacent to Fighting Bayou as well as other areas. Is Billy Donovan involved in that members only club?
From the reports things look spotty but I am excited to sample Mississippi, the "real" south.
