Ask DS: Skinning/Storage Shed

Postby strutter » Wed Jan 01, 2014 6:24 pm

Ok, I'm going to build a new skinning/storage shed this spring. What are some things you guys would want in one and what would you do differently to yours if you could?

A couple years ago I built a 24x20 shed at my camp for storage and skinning deer/game. We left a 12' side open so we could park tractors and 4 wheelers and enclosed the other side and poured a slab (with drain) for the skinning shed. A buddy gave me an old water heater out of a rental house and I had an old porcelain farmhouse sink that we put in it also. You'll need some shelves to hang your knives and a porcelain or stainless table to quarter meat. Later on I found an old deep freezer and put it in there also. For heat we use a propane bottle with the buddy heater element. I wish I had an electric hoist and a way to hang two or three deer while skinning one, just need a few extra meat hooks I guess. The only problem is that all your buddies will want to come over and use the shed, my driveway looks like the processor's on saturday night, but its all good and about the fellowship! I'll try to find some pics of ours, good luck!

Having a counter top to trim, clean, quarter etc. will be priceless. Having a sink would be that much better even if it was just plumbed to the garden hose. Watch craigslist and you can probably find a porcelain or stainless sink/counter for a reasonable price.

If you put a drain........put a steeper grade to the concrete than you think you need.......and then angle it even more to the drain. Every one we've had at camps, they wish it was graded steeper.

If it is not going to be fully enclosed then make sure you have the opening facing to the south or southeast. That way it will block the north wind when it is cold.

Put a large channel in one end and slope towards it with large drain pipe in one end of channel, that way you can spray everything towards channel when cleaning up.
