5x8 trailer wheel bearings

Postby wrdabney » Sat Dec 28, 2013 1:32 pm

I have a 5x8 wire mesh floor trailer. These trailers are pretty popular and I see a lot of them on the road. Here is my dilemma and I was hoping you guys would have a suggestion. We pulled my trailer and 4 wheeler to our duck lease this morning with a buddies truck about and hour away. We blew out a bearing on the way when we were almost there. We made it to the lease and I had to leave the trailer there because he did not have any tools in his truck to change the bearing. I don't have the part number for the bearing but I'm trying to avoid driving my truck over there just to get the part number. I will drive my truck with tools in the morning and was hoping to take a new bearing with me. There is not a parts store close. Long story to ask if wheel bearings on these trailers are pretty standard or do they vary too much to take a chance with a certain bearing?

I just blew one of mine as well this morning. Noticed a horrible smell when I got home like burning. Looked around and found it!
May the wind always be at your back and the sun upon your face, and may the wings of destiny carry you aloft to dance with the stars.

They are standard bearing and race sets....just depends on which ones you need :D I would call the place you bought it and ask them. They could tell you the right ones. After that its just a little elbow grease assuming your spindle isn't scored to bad. Once you get it back up and running recheck the nut after a trip or two once everything has seated.

It's about 10 years old and my dad bought it new but I don't know where. Guess I'll just make an extra trip.

Buy 2 or 3 that may be close. If one works then take the others back, better than making 2 trips.

This! Also make note of your lug pattern and rim size. What I've found are they fairly standard per those dimensions. 5(lung) on 5.5 bolt spacing. One thing I despise is trailer hubs. Kept blowing them on my boat trailer and slid a whole new axle/hub/bearing assembly under it that was 1000lbs heavier.

I'd buy any and all that might possibly work and return the unused ones. Then I'd buy a back up or two for situations such as this. Keep one in truck and one at camp or home depending on time of year.
I am interested in purchasing duck calls that were made by Mike McLemore. I am a family member and they have a sentimental value.

I would just spend the extra money and get a hub kit w/ bearings already installed. Much easier to change out in the field than trying to get the races out of your hub and put new ones in. Academy sells hub kits for the three standard sizes.

Three sizes for utility trailer:

1"

1 1/16" (2000 lb axle)

1 1/16" Outer 1 3/8 Inner (3500 lb axle)

I would pull the bearings, knock out the races and take them to napa. They can measure them and order the correct replacements.

Something to consider is putting new bugs that are more than your standard bearing and race deal. I know their or oil bath hubs that I've heard some folks talk about and they thing highly of them. I replaced the 2 hubs on my 5X8 ATV trailer and jon boat trailer with Vortex hubs. Supposed to be good for 100K miles and only maintenance is to pump grease in through the zerk in the back. The old grease come out the front of the hub as the new grease fills from the back. So far I've been happy. I used to pay to have those things repacked or replaced every year and my cheap soul got tired of spending the money. So I coughed up the money and got these hubs so I wouldn't have to worry about it again. I do have a spare though I carry just in case.

On the being prepared side of this topic.

I got the bearing, race, and seal numbers when I bought the trailer and wrote them on the bill of sale.
