Trespassing Help/Suggestions

Postby Bourbon » Mon Dec 02, 2013 2:45 pm

My company owns a 260-acre tract we planted back to hardwoods. This land was cattle pasture for many years prior to our acquisition.

We are having severe trespassing problems. I know we have some smart people on the board who have dealt with this and am just looking for any options we may have.

They have already cut the fence twice.

We plan on talking with the Parish Sheriff and surrounding landowners. But I know the people that are trespassing either won't talk to us or won't care what we say or do.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

If they are cutting the fence in the same spot each time, repair it and put up a camera. Carry that to the sheriff and file charges.

Just so happens, I am going through something similiar. I have been noticing some well worn 4 wheeler trails on one of my leases. So I skipped a beautiful afternoon (Sunday) of deer hunting to try and catch em. At 3:15 here comes two 4 wheelers across the fence they cut, pass the No Trespassing signs on to the logging road to where I was waiting. I was furious, but was able to hold back, and politely tell them they were trespassing and not to come back. And if caught again, they would have to explain to the game warden. They apologized, said they didn't know the boundaries and left, which we all know is bullcrap. I could have been ugly to em, but i am sure they know where some, if not all of my stands are so I tried the nice guy approach. We will see.

Caught some guys red handed on my place last year, well actually the GW did after I saw them and he caught them. GW wrote them up for trespassing, the guys knew they were in the wrong as they were all piled up in my stands. Put it this way..they ain't been back! Best thing to do is work with the local LEO and let them handle it. Make sure you press charges cause that's the only way they will learn IMO.

Thanks for suggestions. We put out cameras, but they miraculously disappeared.

We have tried to be civil, but they apparently is not working. We have contacted local authorities.

Will keep plugging away.

I hope you get this problem solved. This weekend a guy in camp had someone drive a 4wheeler in on him from the back of our property. He saw him sittin in the stand and turned around. I'll bet my paycheck he was going to hunt that stand. The SOB even had orange on. There are some very bold folks out there these days.

One of the best suggestions for dealing with trespassers I've ever read on this board....

So when I did, I just slipped under there truck and took out the oil plug and pull out the carter key that attaches the whole wheel to the axial and then ease up close by where they were sitting and fired a round about 5 to 10 feet above them on the pine tree they had climbed up and watched the circus begin. They shimmy down the tree like a wounded squirrel and ran like hell to their truck and hauled booty down the road till about that time the engine locked up and the two front tires flew off. I drove by him and gave him the bird and I have yet to see him again!!!!!! Oh and I have ghillie suit and will travel!!!!!!!LOLOLOL

Physical presence is the only thing I've found to really work. If the property isn't being used "they" will figure it out and take advantage. My biggest issue is/was folks who know me. They are the hardest to catch and the most offensive IMO.

We have the same problem. The only way is to stay out there to catch them. Usually they will play dumb and a threat to call the law will work, but then you have the dumb local that's been hunting it for 20 years and thinks he has rights. Then you press charges and have to be careful where you park or what you leave out there. On another note it usually only takes making an example out of one of them for the word to travel in the outlaw community.

Not sure what the trespassing rules are in Louisianer, but if I'm not mistaken, in Ms you go to jail on the spot and get about $1500 in fines. If that's not
true, it should be, and maybe you Louisianer boys can talk to your legislature to get some new rules.

[quote="Bourbon"]Thanks for suggestions. We put out cameras, but they miraculously disappeared. quote]

Please tell me you had the camera locked and they cut the lock and that the camera wasn't just strapped to the tree??

People are crazy. We had some trespassers on our camp a while back. A guy in our camp approached him while in a tree stand and told him he was own private land. The looked at him and said "So." At that point he walked away and called the law. To no avail.
