7 mag ammo

Postby Sparkyibew480 » Sun Nov 24, 2013 9:22 pm

What ammo do you guys shoot that hunt with 7 mag. I am looking for a bullet that leaves a good exit hole and does maximum damage. I have shot Barnes triple shock 110gr, hornady 139 gmx, and federal premium 150 gr Sierra game king btsp . I am not very happy with any of them.

I have shot every load they make out of mine short of shooting custom or hand loads, and it's the ole Remington Core-Lokt 140 gr. I have tried all the hornady, Winchester, or federal loads I can find, but this one patterns the best out of my gun. As far as bullet performance, I have never had an issue with it. Most deer never take a step, the ones that have don't go far when hit good.

139 grain Boat Tail SP by Hornady. It packs a big punch. I've been shooting it out of my 7 mag for 20 years and have never considered changing.

3rd that. IF you shoot them through the lungs, they always die. For the areas I hunt, less than 300yds, the Remingtons do the trick.

What was wrong with the Sierra bullets. One with a lead tip? Really good bullet.

Nosler Partitions. I have switched from Federal Premium 150 BTSP b/c I was never getting an exit hole. Might have trouble finding Federal Premiums though. Spoke to the owner of a place in Troy today, he said Federal Premiums have not been shipped all year. He had some NP's but quite pricey at $60/box.

Meddawg what grain are you shooting? Black duck I got no exit hole from magnum rifle and that's main reason I bought one I had this same problem with a 30-06. That's why I own a magnum rifle now I just gotta figure right bullet for what I want to do. I like to shoot deer in the front shoulder because they usually don't run, but if they do I want good blood trail! Maybe I can't have best if both worlds I dunno.

Corbon with a 160 grain Barnes pill. http://www.corbon.com/corboncart/corbon ... x7mm160-20

Big solid bullet that will always leave an exit wound. More energy at longer distances than the lighter bullets. Nosler has started loading Accubond long range as well. They will have a 168 out in the 7mag that should be tough on deer. I am looking for some in 7RUM now.

I've shot several deer with the 168 vld. Never found a bullet yet they fragment enough to do some significant damage. I had one run about 40-50 yards last year after I popped her in the liver. They hold their energy for a loooong way. If you reload they are sensitive to the seating depth.
