Brett Favre Interview
Am I the only person who has a problem with Brett Favre (and other NFL players) saying if he had a son he would not want him playing football? If he feels that way then why did he play for 20+ years, retire then come back because he missed it so much. Then when he finally does retire he loves it so much he becomes a volunteer high school football coach at Oak Grove. Him being a coach probably makes more kids want to play high school football. Why doesn't he become the Oak Grove soccer coach or volleyball coach and try to influence kids to play something other than football? His actions don't match up with his words.
Re: Brett Favre Interview
My dad didn't want me to be a coal miner which he was for years. I don't want my son in IT which I worked in for over a decade and will probably be back in next year....not much difference.
Re: Brett Favre Interview
i played in high school and love to watch it on saturday's, but i'd be tickled to death if my kid never plays. my kid wants to play y-ball and i haven't gotten to the point of giving in yet. i don't begrudge a man for allowing, or even encouraging his kids to play. i know there are real life lessons that can be learned on the field and i made friendships with my team mates that will always be a part of my fondest memories. i fully appreciate that a kid can get hurt in any sport and i know you can't protect them from everything, but i'd rather my kid not be exposed to the increased risk of serious injury that is inherent with the game. at the end of the day, its just a game and i'm not convinced its worth the risk suffering a potentially life-long injury.
Re: Brett Favre Interview
People ride in a car every day. I know way more people messed up from car wrecks than I do from football and I have played from the lowest to highest levels.
A man who won't has no advantage over the man who can't.
Re: Brett Favre Interview
The difference is that after your dad retired from coal mining then I doubt he volunteered to teach high school kids to be coal miners and encouraged them to be coal miners. I guess my issue is not that ex NFL players say they don't want their kids playing football but that they say that then turn around and do things that encourage other kids to play football.skywalker wrote:My dad didn't want me to be a coal miner which he was for years. I agree with this. I can understand why some people do not want their kids to play. At the same time thy can be hurt doing pretty much anything. Favre talks about symptoms he has know as far as memory loss or not being able to finish sentences but that could also be attributed to the heavy drinking and pill popping he has done in his lifetime. I am sure we all know people that have these same issues that never played a down of football in their life.bigoak wrote:The difference is that after your dad retired from coal mining then I doubt he volunteered to teach high school kids to be coal miners and encouraged them to be coal miners. The issue with football and TBIs is that there is no conclusive data that memory loss is lesser in the general population as compared to those that played football for a living. It seems to make common sense that repeated blows to the head are not good, but to my knowledge, the data that is released is not really detailed (there are rumors that the NFL has been sitting on really damning date though which led to their recent settlement).
Football is a great sport. I played most everything and football meant and still means more to me than all the other sports combined. That said, if my son chooses not to play, I will probably be a little disappointed, but he has to make his own way. I want to guard against steering the course of his life outside of providing a good, Biblical upbringing. As long as that is in place, I'm not overly concerned about the rest.

Liberals pussies will do everything they can to destroy football----they hate it----they look at it as a billion dollar conglomerate with rich, white owners making money left and right off the backs of men who destroy their bodies so the owners can get richer----they don't look at any of the positives.....it's working with the concussion thing - that's their ticket to take football down....football is being changed more and more to the point that I think it'll lose it's appeal over time. I read where there are 10% less Pee Wee football players now than there were 10 years ago and it's obvious why that is----parents don't want their sons to play football because of the constant spotlight on concussions and players committing suicide because of the head injuries. Hell, I can't really blame the parents after seeing all the negative publicity football has gotten lately------More kids will play other sports and football will suffer big time.
When Junior Seau (or any football player) committed suicide most everyone said he did it because of the head injuries he got from football----they don't even think about the fact that since he was 15 he has been idolized because of how good he was----goes to USC, lives the life of a big time player at a big time program---gets drafted as the 5th overall pick and has more money than 99.9% of the population will ever see over his 20 year career......then all of that stops when he retires.....he doesn't get all the attention he used to get, will never make that kind of money again, etc, etc....that right there could send a lot of people into a big-time depression but all the media will say is he killed himself because of the injuries he got playing.
Typical liberal response---a small % of players have had real problems from head injuries---their solution would be to eliminate the NFL altogether (which would eliminate football as a whole) and that would be better. Sound familiar? A small % of Americans don't have health insurance so their plan is to destroy the whole system, throw the baby out with the bath water, then they say everyone has health insurance - but then no one has decent health care. They don't consider all the people that made more money in their short NFL career than they would've made in their entire life - or all the people employed because of the NFL whether it's coaches, trainers, stadium personnel (janitors, concessions, maintenance, etc) players - or the benefit to the local/state/federal economy...or all the high-school players that got a scholarship and a free education to play---a lot of them who wouldn't have had a chance to go to college that now have a degree and zero student loan debt....there is so much good that comes from football that far outweighs the bad - but because there IS bad that these yahoo liberals can use to attack the entire sport, well it'll go from being the top sport to what boxing is now, an afterthought.
