We are starting to get more ducks in the woods. I don't believe that they are new birds but the water is falling slowly so they are moving into the "normal" holes. The problem for me is that the whole danged river (Yazoo) has been out of the banks and in the trees. Good groups of ducks have been in my holes on the river, but they never come back after you set up. Hopefully this weekend will be better. The Arkansas report is looking better so they are on the way...slowly but surely.
I even had to go deer hunting the other day...

Hey softcall, that river is killing the hunting in our area. The hunting will get good when that damn river goes down. It is not forecasted to go down at all this week though. It is backed up so far out into so many fields it is just scattering them out. We are starting to kill some but they are not on us like they usually are, at all. Don't go deer hunting man, it is not that bad. Good luck , let's hope that the next thirty days will be better.

Softcall, you can forget that AR report that I gave you the other day. Just when we thought that everything was finally turning around for the better, we dang near skunked out yesterday. Two of us shot 3 at first light, saw about 2 dozen more within the next few minutes and that was it. We didn't see anything else that morning.
I can say that some of the rice fields in the Stuttgart area had a few birds consisting mainly about 25 percent Mallards that were visible from the road. While driving back to MS, I really only saw ducks in the Stuttgart area. I didn't see any ducks in any of the fields on the way home. It still looks very bleak to me. I got home in time to check the spot where you and I sunk my boat. The only thing I saw was a blue winged teal, that looked injured from September.
I still had a good time during the holiday, wouldn't of traded it for the world. Thank you Lord for giving me the oportunity to get out. I'm still not going deer hunting!

I don't think we will improve measurably until they get some significant snow through the midwest. Right now, the ducks are dry ground feeding in a blugillion corn fields up there and they will stay there until there is absolutely no free water or the food source is covered. It snows in New Orleans, but not in Illinois or Missouri...go figure!

I was not on the bayou/river anywhere near your place when I saw the banded wood duck. I am looking at my map right now, and I can see that unless that woodie has migrated South, she is still about 50 miles upstream of your location. Frankly, I don't think that any ducks have migrated South yet.
I was talking to another source today who told me that he didn't think that first report was too reliable. I don't think that part of the country has frozen up yet.
I'm sorry I haven't emailed you privately for the full banded Wood Duck story. I have been out of touch with reality since the day after Christmas, I haven't even seen a weather report in a week. If you say we're going to have the temperature in the teens.... Watch out! We may get a repeat of that end of the season 4 day river blowout. Interested?

Softcall, we are killing a few. Still pretty slow though. We did have a good one Friday the 28th. A little slower Saturday, terrible Sunday. We did have an OH SH-T group come in on us late Sat. morning. Four of us dropped 7 big fat mallards out of the group. Then for two hours following that we didn't see a duck. Gimmie a report in the next few days. The yazoo is supposed to go down alomost a quarter of an inch today, she's not helping us much. She is spread out across numurous big expanses of water out in fields, not helping at all.Less ducks that I have seen in all my days on Jan. 1. I don't know what think. Can ducks catch anthrax? j/k. My wife isn't even mad at me. This just isn't a good year. I think she likes me.

Hell yeah I am interested Wildfowler.
I agree with crow...no snow in the Midwest so there is no reason for them to move south. I may go deer hunting again...3 times in 5 years.

Did your buddy up in Ill say that the ducks have moved on yet? Lows here are supposed to be in the teens for the next two days. I just can't believe there aren't any ducks.
How high was the water on the bayou when you saw the band? Can we get up in the timber on my eighty from it?
