Duck Report - New Years Eve (12/31/01)

Postby magnum » Mon Dec 31, 2001 7:34 pm

Central Mississippi (not the delta)
2 Hunters
2 Teal
3 shots fired (one of which was a cripple shot)
We thought we would try something diffrent than the strange and mysterious delta, where the ducks shoud be- but aren't.
We saw more ducks at this place than we have seen in the Delta the last few visits! However, they were all high and traveling down the ________ River.
We are gonna try the N. Delta in the morning, hopefully we will be there in time to meet and greet those weary migrators!!

Hunted with bro in law on private lease this morning in central Delta. Saw maybe 200 ducks total and most were high fliers. I may not be good at estimating goose numbers, but from a pit blind we watched snows get up about 2 miles from where we were for over 2 hours. Looked like clouds moving there were so many. By marking two treetop points and block counting, we guessed around 4-500,000 geese. I ain't never seen nothing like it.

Duck Report - New Years Eve (12/31/01)

Well, we went to our lease in the North Delta this morning and were severely disappointed. I am not lying when I say we saw ,MAYBE, 15 ducks total!!!! They were all together in one group about a mile high. How bad is that??? Like featherduster said, the GEESE are here in full force. I have no previous experience with which to estimate the total number of geese, but it was way more than any I have ever seen in pictures or in person. If we had half as many ducks as we have geese we would be in luck. I really don't understand what is going on. There have been some reports on this board of people spotting 10's of thousands of Mallards in single concentrations, this must be the case because they sure aren't flying over any of my holes! Would someone please go and shoot them up and spread them around the rest of the delta!!! I am planning on trying it again Thursday, but I am not exactly gung-ho about it right now. Good luck guys.
