My Thoughts On The Game (Not That Anyone Should Care):
(1) Congratulations! Big win!
(2) HF has recruited 4 potential first rounders in one class. Nkemdiche literally looked NFL ready last night to me. He is going to be a complete animal before the year is over. Obviously, Treadwell is going to be a nightmare slot match-up for anyone not named Alabama this year. Most impressive to me...South Panola's Tony Conner. If he stays healthy and eligible, he will be the safety equivalent of Patrick Willis for Ole Miss before he leaves to make millions.
(3) Not only can HF recruit them, he can coach them up...the team showed great fortitude on multiple occasions last night to win the game. They executed fantastically, the play calling is excellent, they are obviously prepared (makes an LSU fan jealous
).
(4) Things to improve upon...I think the OM offensive line is going to have to make some big improvements before the meat of the schedule gets here. Allowing that many sacks to Vandy is not very promising. OM is going to have to be able to establish a consistent run because more athletic teams will jump the short route stuff and turn them into turnovers unless there is a real run and consistent run threat.
(5) Finally, last week I predicted Ole Miss to win 9 games. I stick to that prediction. This team will only get better as the season progresses.

Re: Smoke em if ya got em Rebs
Agree with most of your assessment Delta. Not sure I agree with 9 regular season wins. I'm still thinking 7. And here is why.
You identified the OL breakdowns. The Rebs have work to do over the next two weeks to shore it up and try to solve some of these issues.
The other big issue IMO is our cornerbacks. While Matthews is one of the best wrs we will face all season, this position appeared to be our D's glaring weakness. We need to get healthy there and get all hands on deck.
RB issues should be resolved as season progresses and young backs get experience. Mathers out with injury last night did not help matters. If we don't overuse him, Scott should be a major scoring threat all season, especially late in games.
Just glad to get the W.

Credit to Ole Miss and Hugh Freeze as hard nose tough athletic and get the win...but this team needs to improve dramatically to compete for 9 wins. Most of that in the coordinators. LSU, BAMA, TEXAS, etc. defenses with film are gonna eat Ole Miss alive if they run the offense they ran last night all season.
Re: Smoke em if ya got em Rebs
I agree with this...dang, agreeing with Camlock again....twice in one week.camlock wrote:Credit to Ole Miss and Hugh Freeze as hard nose tough athletic and get the win...but this team needs to improve dramatically to compete for 9 wins. You will not see defenses like those mentioned above give you that QB run that Vandy did all night. How come in the second half they did not have the end forcing the handoff I do not know. Will give UM coaching credit in they did take advantage of the mistakes Vandy kept giving them...but I do not see many teams doing that. Better defenses will bait that short pass to slot back. I understood the playing off the slot by 7 or 8 yards, but not the backing up of the DB once ball was snapped. In Vandy's defense, we will say it was first game mistakes. The WR for Vandy is a beast but the QB is not. Think you are right as Rebel fans to be a little worried about your DBs. More than a few calls went the Rebels way too. The pass interference call where there was no pass interference was huge for the Rebels. A few no calls really helped the Rebs keep momentum in several situations. A very exciting game that either team was going to feel lucky to win when the clock struck 0:00.

An impressive showing for the University of Ole Miss, to be sure! Always great to start off with the W!
Re: Smoke em if ya got em Rebs
I don't understand an SEC team not being able to line up under center and get 2-3 yards, run screens and have short high percentage pass plays. In my opinion, in this league, you have to be able to go into a more ball control offense at times throughout a game...like when you've jumped on them on the road in the 1st quarter and you receive that ball coming out of the half. After you score on your 3rd straight possession in the 4th...Ole Miss offense is one bad play away from just giving the momentum back, and if you stop them on 1st down you get ahead, stop em on 2nd down you've almost won the possession...I just can't get down with this style of offense throughout an entire SEC season, unless we are content to be 7-8 wins...SWAG wrote:I agree with this...dang, agreeing with Camlock again....twice in one week.camlock wrote:Credit to Ole Miss and Hugh Freeze as hard nose tough athletic and get the win...but this team needs to improve dramatically to compete for 9 wins. As for the DB's...I firmly believe our defensive coordinator had a worse night than our players. I think they'll be ok, they ran horrible defenses for what Vandy was doing, but to their credit...they adjusted after the 2nd quarter barage and limited some of that.

Re: Smoke em if ya got em Rebs
Obviously, I liked the pass interference call. Technically, it was PI. But compared to the much worse PI no calls involving Moncrief, it did not appear to warrant a flag. I think it was a cumulative effect judgment call by the official, essentially saying enough is enough. Yet, if the officials had made some earlier calls, it likely would not have gotten to that point.
Very similar to the holding call against Vandy. It got so bad and obvious, they finally threw the flag. Wish our DL could wear tear away jerseys.
Vandy benefitted greatly from a bad spot last year that kept their game winning drive alive. So, no sympathy here.

Re: Smoke em if ya got em Rebs
Yes Moncrief did get held...but NO WAY was that pass interference on the call in question. Not technically pass interference, not anything. Was timed perfect and the opposite hand was not on the shoulder of the receiver as the ref ASSUMED it was. You were in the bourbon if you that that was anything other than good defense.Po Monkey Lounger wrote:Obviously, I liked the pass interference call. Technically, it was PI. Did anyone see a block in the back on the long run to win the game????
Yes Vandy did receive some no calls, but none that kept or swung momentum the way a couple did for UM.
I was on the Rebels side in this one...but was not wearing red/blue glasses.

Re: Smoke em if ya got em Rebs
Very good first SEC vs SEC game. But, who caught the info on the Vandy punter? What other school has a punter who is studying to be a neurosurgeon? WOW. On top of that a walk on. Yes first punt sucked (jitters for sure) but after that he did a pretty good job.
Congrats to Ole Miss, some good young players, the WR is very impressive, hands the size of Robert Horry. However, that close to a Vandy team without starting QB and other key players........dont know about 9 wins....maybe 6-7 this year. Stay healthy and coach the younger ones, 9 next year is forseeable.
Waiting on the TIDE to kick off tomorrow evening!!!

Vandy was missing their starting QB???? I must have missed that. Carta-whatshisname is and has been the established starter coming out to fall practice.skywalker wrote:Very good first SEC vs SEC game. But, who caught the info on the Vandy punter? Vandy had one receiver that was out because of the rape incident. Yeah, that probably hurt them. But dont act like Vandy was missing all kinds key players.
9 wins is gonna be tough, just gotta see how much improvement we get.
