ID....chestnut?

Postby Denduke » Wed Aug 23, 2017 2:07 pm

Bought this years ago as a chestnut. Not a tree more like big shrub. Tasty nut but not a burr more like "wing wraps"...size of quarter.

I have no idea? Va Tech has a really good plant ID app. There are a couple different ways to use it. You can key it out. Which, from your picture I didn't have enough info to do. Or, you can enter a zip or use your device's GPS location. When using that option, it will pull up all the know species likely in that location. Including shrubs, vines, natives, and exotics. Having no idea where this is located, I just used my location assuming we are more than likely in the same range. It pulled up 170 different species and I couldn't find a single fruit like this in the list.

This is a really useful app for field ID so you're not having to try to key it out from a picture later.

Edit: app does not include grasses

I think I got it "bare root" from Jeff Davis Co-Op for what that's worth...Hafta ask Greg....thanks for idea " origin".
Guy on da fudge cleared it up. Don't know why I wanted to make it chestnut or chinkapin.
