I planted some Elbon rye in the fall of 2011. I've just let it seed out each summer and then mowed or disked it the last two falls. I've gotten 3 winters out of one planting ( yeah, I'm cheap). I've noticed that the rye is still green and lush right now but my oats have been toast for about a month due to the cold temps. My wheat is even showing slight cold damage but my rye isn't.
Here's a good thread on rye vs wheat. http://www.qdma.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25851
What I've read is that rye will scavenge nitrogen whereas wheat won't. This is good news if you're planting a summer plot behind rye and you want to save as much of your soil nitrogen as possible.
There's also a very lengthy link on the above thread about cereal grains and cover crops this same guy wrote. If you have a couple hours, they're both worth reading. http://www.outreachoutdoors.com/phpBB3/ ... f=13&t=505

Re: Cereal Rye (not ryegrass)
Those guys have been singing the praises of rye for awhile. Sadly, the champion is dealing with ALS. Very sad.
