Water Depth

Postby missed mallards » Thu Nov 14, 2013 12:04 pm

Now since the growing season is over, and the fruits of our labor is laying in wait of the winter arrivals.

How deep ya'll typically flood?

Our ag fields will have from 2-4" of water if all goes well.
Our millet, put 6" on it and turned the well off. Got the pipe set to hold up more if needed but no more than a foot.

what say ya'll.
If I don't do it, I ain't gettin nun.......So i'm doing it

You want at least enough that the keel on your decoys doesn't rest on the bottom. I don't know that 2"-4" would get the job done.

I put 10-12" on mine. Mostly because it is grassy and 6" of water looks like no water.

If I had a harvested bean field or something similar, 6" would be plenty.

You don't want to go over 18" if you want dabblers to be able to feed on submerged seeds on the bottom. That 18" is the max on big birds like mallards. Teal and such need less. I think I read that 6" is optimum for all of them. You know how birds love that water that is barely covering the clods.

Saw a bit on flooded timber the other day and they said the 6 - 12" was the ideal depth for dabbling ducks.
Looking for 2 duck calls from Dominic Serio of Greenwood (ones for Novacaine)
