Millet + Ducks

Postby missed mallards » Mon Aug 12, 2013 4:12 pm

Never have planted it, don't know much about it.

As far as the 'crop', it looks awesome. amazingly, I think we got a 99% stand or close to it. Knocked back the weeds, got stand, got blind.

What do ya'll do about a 'landing' area? I know they don't like to land in standing stubble (at least not on us).

Thinking about cutting/bushhogging/disking strips before the plants put on heads? Have even thought of spraying/burning off a few 'spots' to allow for easy access/ Ducks. We have access via roads to/from blind so that shouldn't be an issue.

The guy planting it got a tad carried away so we're literally wall to wall millet (not a bad thing). It was planned to leave out a few openings but it didn't happen (again, not a bad thing).

Do ya'll worry about it? Just throw the water to it and let it go?

Give me some opinions.
If I don't do it, I ain't gettin nun.......So i'm doing it

I either leave a hole unplanted or spray it before it heads.

Keep your eye out for worms. They will destroy your plot if they get in there unchecked.

If I read and understand this correctly, you can NOT legally manipulate (spray, burn, disc strips, etc.) this crop at this point and hunt waterfowl over it. You can legally flood it, just not manipulate it.
You can manipulate it and hunt dove over it, just not waterfowl. Hope this helps you make your decision.

Let me clear something up
If the crop has not headed out yet, you may spray it, cut it, whatever. But, if it has headed out you can not manipulate it.

What type of millet? Jap and brown top will usually lay down once you get water on it.
