Look at the mat that these rye cover crops are leaving and you will see why you would get some pigweed emergence suppression.

Do not know if I agree with all that is in this video, especially about need as much diversity in the cover crop as they talk about, but it does show a lot of the benefits of cover crops.

I have seen folks spread wheat and then hip up the ground and got emergence from the wheat. They would cut the wheat and plant directly into the bed for wheat beans. Seemed to work pretty good and they alway cut pretty descent wheat. Dont see why you couldnt do it with rye.

I think we would be looking at cool season cover crops here in MS for the most part....planting them in the Sept 15-Oct 25 time frame. We would not really have pigweed growing during the time we were growing the cover crop. Burndown/rolling application would most likely be during the Mar 10-April 10 window for cotton, earlier for corn. Still would make pigweed chemical applications, but control would also be the cover of the dead cover crop. I am just running the scenario thru my head. I assume this is the general idea.

Now that y'all brought it up...I've still got that damn thing. Wish I'd thought about that when my sunflower/pigweed field was knee high.

There are a lot of pigweeds on 61 between Memphis and Cleveland. Even in some I assume Liberty fields with the green flags. How many brothers got blown up back in the flame cultivator days?
