bow only this year

Postby jdbuckshot » Thu Feb 06, 2014 8:48 am

I plan on making the commitment to go bow only this year, I will probably accompany a few folk on gun hunts - buddy hunts, but as far as my planned set ups I am going to shoot my brids with a bow this year.

anybody else chasing them with the bow ?

Bow only here on our lease. Tough when the leaves are off the trees and temps are cold. Hard to put on enought clothes and still draw a bow quietly. I airballed an arrow over one this year after hitting my sleeve. Also tough watching bucks out of range, try to move a climber in close to where you have seen them and never see them again. Patience stinks. Kinda got to me this year. I didnt kill a buck all year but thats part of it. The hardest part is when you see your friends killing bucks by sitting in a warm box stand somewhere. It sure is nice though to sit on a place and not hear a gun shot all year long.

Forgot to mention, going to try the birds this year. A couple guys have tried it over the years and I know of only one bird killed. Not sure if I am going to try a blind or what tactics. Sorry I filled the last post w nothing but deer info.

You are a better man than I, JD.

Although I am looking for a double barreled black powder scatter gun to hunt them with.

I thought I knew a lot about turkeys, how they react to calls, decoys, etc.

But when I started bow hunting turkeys what I thought I knew about turkeys was totally wrong. I got chances to watch turkeys at fairly close distances for long periods of time. and a good many of them. There were times had I been hunting with a gun I would have already shot the bird and my hunt been over, but I got to watch them for longer periods of time.

great experience and learned a lot last year. can't wait till this year.

I hunt the early Kansas bow only season every year. No blind. Use a decoy and hide behind a tree big enough to draw without being seen. Got one or two every year for the last 6 years.

Bow only, NO. I will try and get a couple killed with a shotgun and then go bow only for the last bird. I killed a couple merriams in Nebraska last year with my compound bow but I think that gave me some inflated confidence. Looking for a humbling experience trying to self film a bow kill in MS this year I cant wait. And I will be hunting out of a ground blind.
