I agree if he can handle a 20 I'd go with that cause he could shoot it more years. If he can't I bought my daughter a Mossberg model 510 in the 410 when she was 4. I let her practice with light loads then put a 3" number 6 in for the hunt. I topped it with a red dot. Keep in mind she's a little bitty thing so she sits between my legs and I hold a primos trigger stick up. She holds the gun on the shooting stick and works everything on her on. She's deadly with it. I patterned it out to 30 yards and feel comfortable out to that range with it. That gun can be bought with a full or modified barrel. I went with the full. She's killed to long beards graveyard dead with it at 21 and 27 yards. It shoots a good tight pattern to where I feel like it will either be a quick kill or a clean miss
