A miss ?

Postby missed mallards » Sat Apr 06, 2013 12:18 pm

Whats the game plan once the ignorant sob dodges your shot?

Go about it like nothing happened? Call more? Less?

Depends on the bird. I wounded one a few years back and got on a gobbling bird that afternoon in the same vicinity. Bird came in with a limp gobbling and strutting, same bird killed him the second chance. If he is hot enough the shot won't mess him up others will be done for the season, others will REALLY hang up about 60 yds out.

First plan wound be to pattern the shotgun and practice shooting

Second would be to hunt a different bird, cause that one is obviously a fast sob if he dodging shot (Matrix comes to mind)

Sorry, couldn't resist.

I'd just hunt him as usual. You'll know real quick-like if he's graduated with honors.

Thanks for the replies.

hurt the ole soul, but w/ everything that happened I have no ill feelings.

The hunt was one I'll always remember, but it is what it is.

My remedy has always been to set three beer cans turkey-head high and shoot them at 20, 30 and 35 yards. Something about all those pellet holes in the aluminum helps start the healing process.

just be smart about it. hunt as usual. but just know the manner in which you tricked him before might not work second go around. took my sister several years back. we were in a pop up in the middle of the field with decoys out. she mised him. afterwards he was blind shy and decoy shy (understandable). so i scrapped the blind (only used it to start with cuz it was raining) and didn't use a decoy. swapped mouth calls and slate that i had previously called him up with, for different sounds. she missed on a saturday, i killed him the following thursday.

you will truly never get that bird after you "fool" him the second time. to this day that is one of my more memorable turkeys.

killed one a couple weeks ago that i shot and missed opening weekend. killed him bout 20 steps from where the first dance with him took place, only this time he wasn't so lucky. didn't use a decoy either time, and was using the same call, just more subtle this go around, and changed my calls up somewhat.
