I have hunted right outside of Sundance and around Rapid City, SD. in Wyoming, we hunted a private ranch that bordered some of the Triple J Ranch. The cabin we stayed in was actually built right where Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid hid out after robbing a bank. Very pretty country and very steep, so be ready to walk. Birds were very vocal and easy to call for us. There's tons of national forest on the Wyoming side too for public hunting. Those birds, according to a good friend of mine that did his masters on Black Hills Merriam's, are possibly the purest population of Merriam's. Very white birds.

I hunted in an area that Arduckslayer's buddy directed me to west of sondance and killed our limit with no problem. We also limited in SD under his direction in the southern end of the SD black hills. Our purest merriams were SE Montana.

Take a coyote howler, get a 4wd and cover some ground. Don't try to be a hero and walk everywhere. It's big country. Our jeep Cherokee was perfect.

Thanks for the tip on the coyote howler. I am taking 2 injured veterans on the trip with one of them being a below the knee amputee. So we will try and keep walking to a minimum even though he'll probably run circles around me.

Looking forward to it and hopefully I'll have plenty of pictures to share afterwards. Going out there May 12-15

Easy hunting. Dumb birds compared to MS.

Alright, y'all got my mind to wandering. Are most of you flying out there? Rapid City? And is a 4x4 pickup rental sufficient? Maybe in a coupla years...
