20 Gauge Choke Recommendations - 870 Rem

Postby SB » Mon Mar 05, 2012 6:41 am

I will be trying my luck this year on turkeys with a 20 gauge. What is a good choke to start with, and to hopefully finish with too. Are the Primos line of chokes any good, specifically their Tightwad line?

Where would you start on shells? I would like to go a little old school and was thinking some high brass lead #6s if they pattern well.

I want to eventually kill a turkey with every guage 870 made. I got them all except for the 28, even the 16.

Check out the old gobbler forums. They have a 20 ga section and a lead section on there. Lots of info.

depends on what you want to invest in a choke. I put a primos jelly head on my sons 20g 870 and thats what I hunt with now. It will do the trick. You probably can get tighter patterns and longer shots from other chokes but for the money around $30 give or take the Jelly head works great.

Remington super-full turkey choke and hevi-shot 6's or 7's = dead turkeys

Thanks, guys. I went to the old gobbler forum like CW recommended. Pretty good sight. More people are shooting 20s than I thought. I'm sure it is still a very small percentage when compared to 12 gauges.

I'm leaning torwards's the Primos tightwad choke and Federal's Heavy Weight #7s to start with. I couldn't believe these shells cost $4/each. Van's has a Rhino brand choke tube for $120! I was shocked at what this stuff CAN cost. I've been shooting the same old load with the 12 ga so long, I'm out of touch with this stuff.

Where did you find the HW #7's?

Van's in Brandon for $20/box of 5.

From what I read on Old Gobbler Forums, there is a $15 rebate from Federal when 2 or more boxs are purchased.

Midway's price was just shy of $15/box and were on back order.

Dunn's sporting goods also has the federal 7's

A lot of folks like the Remington choke and it's cheap. Those guys on OG are gun/load/pattern fanatics.

I can't argue with you about how many birds they've killed but since SB's question was about a gun, that board is a good reference. Kinda like Osage roost has a BUNCH of call collectors that seem more interested in collecting than hunting. Each board seems to have its fanatics, but the only way to really find out about how to call one and kill it is to get out there and do it...OJT :D

My son shoots a jellyhead with 3" #6 hevi shot. Shoots a great pattern. It is in a Franchi though.

My wife shoots the jellyhead with nitro 7s. It puts the birds down.
