Arrow weight question

Postby chopper30 » Mon Jul 18, 2005 12:12 pm

Here's a question for you experts.... :?

How much does 22 grains affect arrow flight?

Background: I'm looking at purchasing an alumi nock or two for the upcoming season, and it adds 22 grains to your arrow. How much will this affect the flight/speed of my arrow. I shoot a MQ1, 30" draw lenght, acc's, shooting right at 300fps.

Here is the link

as far as speed, i don't remember the effect, i know it takes 15 grains of arrow weight to affect anything in your flight (speed, accuracy, etc etc). In other words, if you change by 10 grains, you should get relatively the same arrow flight, change by more then it's different. However, this is shaft weight that i'm talking about, not broadhead or knock.

Anyway, chopper, if you're shooting 300 right now, 22 grains is not going to slow the arrow down enough to matter.... I'll just answer it like that

I know the difference between a 100 and a 125 grain field point has always shot noticeably different for me. You change up 22 grains and put a broadhead on the front of that arrow there's no telling what'll happen then! I wouldn't think speed would be affected but by about 8-10 ft p/second, but your windage might change also. That might be a minor change, but most folks only get one shot when Mack Nasty Rack Daddy comes round...

I like those knocks your talking about. I think that's a wise investment.

Chopper wants to be "cool" and see where his arrow hits... sort of like shooting tracers from a bow

jk in all seriousness, i've heard both good and bad about them... some friends that shot them said that it hurt their form because they wanted to jerk to see the luminok, all the while, messing up form and causing their shooting to be worse....

It's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

Adding 22 grains to the nock end will stiffen your arrow slightly. I don't know what weight you're pulling or which spine ACC you have but I'll bet it won't hurt too much. If you are getting 300 fps out of your bow you are probably right on the edge of spine stiffness if not to the weak side. You may have to move your rest just a little for tuning purposes and in turn move your sights. Shoot the bow with both the new nocks and the old ones and compare the groups.
