They make a tool, I am sure I have seen it advertised somewhere that gives you some leverage...about all I can think of. Other than that, you could use a bigger drill bit for drilling your pilot hole.
It's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

Personally I don't like using those screw in steps for several reason.

You are damaging the tree and could reduce it's ability to fight of insects by using those screw in's. This may not be important to you but I do care for the environment more than most and just hate to use devices like that when there are alternatives.

I prefer the strap on steps that are sold at a very good price. They are easy to climb, they are safe, and they do not harm the trees at all.

I do understand the use of the screw on steps as they are less visable.
But I don't like the way your foot rides on them while climing and I always have a fear of them shifting under 200 pounds of weight.

Good luck on your up-coming season..

Had some spindles break on me on a real cold morning back several years ago. Matter of fact, it was the first TWO steps at the bottom of the tree! Just glad I didn't get halfway up the tree before they broke! 8)

My suggestion is "dont use them".

Here is the end result of my short period of using them.
