Special Day
Special Day
This has been a special year for me. I've watched my son mature before my eyes into a pretty decent little hunter. Before you judge, yes he's only 8, but the way he handles himself in the woods and with a gun is pretty impressive. He studies deer, ducks, turkeys and anything outdoors. He can identify all species of trees that we have on the farm. ( I know several grown men that can't do that, including myself) He's a student of the game if you will.
Anyway this year he's harvested several doe and let several small bucks pass. I've given him the green light, but he has chosen to wait on a decent buck. This past Saturday he insisted that I take my gun along on the hunt. Most times when he goes I make it all about him, but he said we was gonna double that afternoon so I gave in.
20 minutes after getting into the stand we had a doe bolt across the field. Not far behind her was a buck we both recognized from trail cameras as a cull. A 3 year old, wide 4 point that needed to go. Hunter took the shot (about 150 yards) and dropped the deer in its tracks. After a celebration we called my father in law to bring the ranger. While we were waiting that same doe (I'm assuming) bolted back out of the thicket. This time she had an 8 point right on her tail. There was nothing special about him but the chance to double with my son was all it took for me to send a round his way.
It is for sure one of the most memorable hunts I've ever experienced.

Re: Special Day
Good stuff! I think that is plenty old enough. Sound sliek you've given him all the tools to understand what he is doing. My son killed his first at 6 so I am probably biased.
