Velvet Mount opinions

Postby BLOOD DOG » Fri Oct 25, 2013 7:34 am

Ive bot a buck that I killed last year that was in nearly full velvet. To score then in the permenant P&Y book you gotta strip the velvet off. Im torn as to weather have artificial velvet put back on because my taxidermist says it will look fake. Whats yalls opinions on it?

You wanted an opinion so here goes. Take it for what it's worth.
I've never seen fake velvet, but I'm sure it will look fake. I wouldn't do it.

Better question is why in the heck did you strip the real velvet off? Who cares about your name being in a book? You had a once in a lifetime trophy and were more worried about getting your name in a book?

Sorry for being tough this morning, but that's my opinion.

Artificial velvet does look fake, and it is EXPENSIVE.

I have done some research on it and it not THAT expensive. As for having the name in the books, its an ego thing. LOL

There are some guys that do nothing but antler reproduction and artificial velvet I just dont know If thats the way to go.

Surely somebody on hee has a velvet mount that can chime in.

Heres the buck. I have tried to find somebody that will reconstruct the partially strilled tine and cracked tips but have been unable to find anyone that will do it. In hindsite stripping it was a mistake but its done now.

I killed my first full velvet buck this season as well that is being mounted as we speak. Mine was in full velvet when I shot him but scuffed it up on one side when he crashed down a hill. I have too heard bad things about reproduction velvet but I wanted mine natural and seen no reason to fix what he tore up while falling. Gives him a little more character. I too would never take velvet off to be scored no matter what the size. They can score it with velvet and take off whatever inches they want for velvet and call it that. If I have to take velvet off for my name in a book then it just won't be in the book. My mount should be getting done within the next few weeks.

Have seen fake velvet on a mount, looks awful. I would not even consider it.
