Fighting bucks......

Postby quackerkiller » Mon Oct 20, 2014 12:28 pm

A buddy went to check a camera yesterday at lunch..... Got there and two bucks were tearing the woods apart... They split and he watched them run off.... He went home and grabbed his crossbow, and came back to them going after it again.... This time they were locked up.... He killed one and thought the other as dead.... Of course he wasn't so the guy that came to help get them out got the other one..... Both respectable deer.... WHY were they fighting this hard this early? My never would have believed it had I not seen video! Blows my mind....

I had 6 bucks in a group under me last Thursday and the larger two were making scrapes and hooking every bush around.
Never confronted each other but apparently they liked the cool morning.

Establishing dominance and splitting up the bachelor groups. Happens every year about this time, but usually doesn't get too violent.
I heard a knock-down drag-out fight in late Oct. several years ago right before daylight. I saw three bucks headed in three different directions when it was over and all were nice mature deer. Later in the morning, I walked out to where they had been and the woods looked like a bulldozer had been there.

Last year, I watched three good bucks spar for several minutes as four small bucks watched. Was just about exactly this time of year. After the fight ended all the bucks walked off together. Unfortunately, they paid no attention to my snort wheeze or grunts.....

We watched a couple small bucks sparring a little Saturday morning...but no major knock down drag out type stuff described by the OP.

First Friday afternoon of season, had a 135" 8 point and 18" 7 point fighting to the death 20 yards from me. They were tearing trees down and running full speed. They spooked after 30 min or so and ran 100 yards, took a breath and went right back at it just as hard as when they started. Wasn't expecting to see that

I was a guest at said camp. Had to shoot 6 does before they can shoot a buck. And buck wasn't the 140" minimum. All I could do was watch man

I went to get a camera saturday and about 1/4 acre of my food plot was tore all to pieces from where they had been fighting. When I saw it from 50 yds out I thought the hogs had finally got to my place. Unfortunaltly my camera was on the other end so I didn't get any of the action on camera.
