Turkey and chicken farms across the Midwest are being decimated by avian flu. Farms are losing tens of thousands of birds to the illness. Those farms are also having to make heavy layoffs, unfortunately.
Here is a question for the biologists and scientists. How likely is this avian flu epidemic to pass to the wild population of native birds? Ducks, geese, pheasants, grouse, songbirds?
Avian flu

Re: Avian flu
I get USDA updates almost daily and a new strain has popped up in Indiana making two HPAI strains making the rounds. We now have H5N2 and H5N8 to deal with and has also been detected in wild birds in Kentucky. Has been rampant in Iowa and Minnesota with new cases almost daily. States in the Ms. flyway infected are North and South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Arkansas, Kentucky, Michigan and further west in Kansas, Montana, California and even British Columbia and Ontario. Millions of chickens and turkeys have been destroyed and more becoming infected daily. Just a matter of time before it hits a major migration of wild birds it is feared. As it is already devastating to poultry farmers let's hope it doesn't hit our wild birds.
Helping ducks have a bad day since 1961.

"According to the USDA, the virus is being spread by wild geese and ducks, which carry the disease without appearing sick. Though two strains of the virus are currently circulating among wild and domestic flocks, the vast majority of deaths have been caused by a strain called H5N2, the USDA reported. This “highly pathogenic” form of the disease can wipe out huge flocks in a matter of days, but poses little risk to humans, according to the Centers for Disease Control."
