Polk to resign

Postby MSDawg870 » Thu Mar 27, 2008 3:42 pm

at the end of the season.

Ron Polk announces resignation
March 27, 2008 by Gregg Ellis
Legendary Mississippi State baseball coach Ron Polk announced on Thursday afternoon he will retire at the end of the season.

The Bulldogs are currently 10-13 on the year and play host to Georgia this weekend.

“It goes without saying that we are m ost appreciative of the outstanding job Ron Polk has done for Mississippi State baseball,” Templeton said. “His decision does not come as a surprise because we had a conversation about this timeline even before the season started.”

Polk is in his 29th season at MSU and 35th as a college coach.

Hate to see him go out on a season like this when the team is struggling.

Dang I wish this wasn't true! Any chances it will be someone other than members on the current staff who will replace him??? I could see a young John Cohen doing good here??? Baylor coach would be good. WHat about a list of possibles? I know GH22 says it is Raffo and I tend to agree, but I would hope they may promote him to Assistant Head Coach or something and give the manager position to someone else. What are the thoughts of seeing McMahon back at MSU. I wasn't a big fan of P.M. but I do not want us to go through a 7-10 year experimental period of finding a suitable replacement :( :( :(

Forget baseball, we are a football and basketball team now.

He is a coaching legend. I guess we will lose the MS logo too. :(

Pat McMahon is not welcomed back at MSU, as far as I care. He left Polk with barely nothing on the roster to work with. At least with Polk doing it now, someone will come in or Raffo stepping in to a job with a team ready to go.

John Cohen has started building a program at UK, and I do not see him leaving. UK will pay him whatever he wants to stay.....and they have more money in the athletic budget than we do.......way more.

Steve Smith has no reason to leave Baylor......zero pressure, 40 win avg seasons, recent CWS visits.

I do not see McNickle taking over. He will probably leave when Polk does. The next head coach will be a disciple of Polk, that's for sure. If you go to adding up all the former players that are coaching now, it's a pretty good list.

I see us keeping the MS logo because the main person that is against it (LT) is leaving also.

the old saying "be careful what you wish for, you just might get it" comes to mind.

i don't follow baseball much anymore, but i was recruited by coach polk in 93.........and played against him in subsequent years. he was honest w/ me up front (which you don't get alot of when being recruited) and always fielded outstanding teams. the teams that coach Mac fielded and prospered with were, for the most part, coach polk recruits........names such as my good friend richard lee, eric dubose, scott polk, jeremy jackson, etc etc etc come to mind.

maybe it was time, maybe it wasn't..................but, i sure hope he wasn't he wasn't "forced" to resign due to a bunch of know-it-alls..........................he deserves better than that.

Polk's retirement letter. Page 3 is pretty good. You will have to right click and open each letter in a new page to read it.

If State cannot get Cohen or Smith, and I doubt they can get these guys, the next person on the list IMHO should be MIKE KINNISON from Delta State. If I am not mistaken, he has the highest winning percentage of any coach at any level in college baseball right now. He is all business, has ties to the state of Mississippi for recruiting purposes, has won a national title on the D2 level and knows what it takes to win.
