David, I worked in financial aid and scholarships at Miss State for 3 years. I had access to records. There's loopholes in the financial system. I became very good friends with the financial director over athletics at that time. I asked him this very same question about Ron's argument over the limits. He laughed and said they're all covered, no matter the scholarship %. The baseball players were very familiarized with all that was available to them aside from the athletic scholarship. When it's all said and done, they're all on a full ride.

Respectfully, GH

But seriously, I have no doubt that they are educated on taking advantage of any aid scraps available. But that available is not comparable to that available in the LSUs, Vandys, and others. Unless you deny LA has more scholastic aid available for residents, you cannot say they baseball players there don't have more help. Do you know how easy it is for a LA resident to get terrific financial aid to go to an in-state school?

Numbers don't lie. It was all in black and white. Louisiana has TOPS. It's an academic scholarship. Mississippi has MTAG. You have to maintain a certain GPA to keep both. I have friends down here on TOPS. It doesn't help as much as you would think. The money available is based upon what it costs to attend each university. Where it may cost $10K yearly to attend State, it's $30K at Vandy. LSU is probably in $15K range.

The team that is on the field right now was the #2 ranked recruiting class in the nation that year. Let that sink in. Cohen isn't having an issue recruiting over scholarship limits. I never hear him complain about the limits. The scholarship argument is a mute point. It's obviously not about scholarships when you've got kids taking a "25%" over full ride offers. I just looked at the commitments/signees for the past 3 yrs and for next season. These kids are turning down schools that offer full scholarships to come to State for partials. It's not about the money. It's all about where they want to go. I never once had a baseball player walk into the office I worked at and ask about student loans for the 3 years I was there. They didn't have to. They were all on baseball and academic scholarships.

We can argue about this til we're black and blue in the face. Scholarships are not the reason we're getting our asses handed to us, week in and week out. These kids we recruit are either overrated or majorly underachieving. I've attended games at Dudy Noble for 28 years. I've seen the hey days of the 90's and early 2000's. That 89-90 squad is the best team I've ever seen take the field at Dudy Noble. I haven't seen it this bad in a long time. And I'm not saying it's because of Cohen, Butch and Mingione either. I haven't figured out whether or not we're bringing in kids that we're "projecting" to increase their skills or something else. If they aren't hitting .400 in high school, they won't hit in college. If he's hitting .315, he'll be a .275 college hitter at best ....... and that's what looks like we're doing.

You're missing the point. There's no cheating or "supplementing" of the program. Like I said from the start, the academic scholarships kick in where the baseball scholarship ends. Ron and Pat recruited smart kids for a reason.
