Could someone confirm Ole Miss's schedule back when they claimed national championships? I've heard that the teams back then didn't play but 6 or 8 games or so. I've also heard (rumors most probably) that UM had a weak schedule in the late 50's and early 60's. In other words they didn't play anyone with a winning record and granted they had an above average coach (Vaught) with slightly above average talent. That's why they won games and excited Mississippian's emotions by waving the confederate flag, and seemed to be at national champion status.

I admit, I am a State alumni / fan and this story is easy for me to want to believe, but facts are facts. Is there any truth to the idea that UM lucked up and had an easy schedule with a slightly above average team and an over zealous support base that forced a national championship status on the team of that era?

I don't know what their schedule was but i'm sure they were playing the LSUs and Alabamas of the day, which were great teams also.

The fact is if they had played the other two teams involved in the NC run those 3 yrs they would've gotten smoked by at least 3 td's or more.

Yep, there was quite a little stretch in the last decade that UM fans referred to "Death Valley" in Redstick as "Vaught Hemingway South". We played better there than LSU did. For a while, the Rebs were thinking about giving up our home game every other year and just playing in BR every year.

As to the Tide and Bigwater's point that UM did not play them as much back in the 50s and 60s as MSU did, that was because the Bear was ducking Vaught. He was sceeerrt.
