What cover for outside kennel

Postby GreenheadJim » Sun Mar 30, 2014 11:12 am

I have a 10x10 dog kennel that I am going to expand to a 10x20 at some point. What would be the best cover to put on it for shade? I'm thinking I'm only going to cover 10' of it. Any help is appreciated.

I think tractor supply sells a 10 foot canopy that fits over a 10 by 10.

Don't waste your money on the kennel shade covers. Build a free standing cover or a lean-to if you can. It will last longer, withstand the wind and will keep the kennel and the dogs dry and in the shade.

Yep, if you're going to cover, get rain protection while you're at it.

What I have used the shade cover's for is this: my kennel has west exposure and in the summer that meant an oven, so I put the kennel shade on the west side of a 10'x10' Behlen kennel with zip ties. Instant shade, lets air through and I stopped it high enough above the slab that she can see out. It's lasted 3 years and still looks good.

I have used the kennel covers in the past but they didnt last long. I eventually broke down and had a metal carport put over my kennels. I agree that the covers are not the best long term solution.

I built a roof for my 10x10 about a year ago. Just used to some 2x4x12s, a 2x12 to get some slope, and some old roofing tin that I had left over from a shop that was torn down. Took me a weekend to build it taking my time and making it up as I went. I have less than 50 bucks in it. Looks a lot better than tarp style cover, and provides lasting weather and sun protection.

Yup, U bolt the 2bys to the kennel frame, and screw Galvalume sheets to that. Its reflective and provides shade and rain protection as well.I know it lasts at least 20 years !

I used a combination of galvalume sheets and tennis windscreen. 'Course our dog always stays in the house with us.

Check with tennis clubs. They usually discard old screens when they replace with new.

I'm still using it for wind/water screens in the duckboats. Comes-in handy to keep dog from shaking-off on everything outside of their 'place' after retrieves.
