Need advice quick.....Truck stuck in 4-Wheel Drive

Postby GreenheadJim » Tue Dec 27, 2011 2:51 pm

My 2005 GMC Z71 is stuck in 4-Hi. I have pressed every button I can, but it will not move. Anyone know what to do?

Tried it in park? Tried it in neutral? Tried it rolling slowly on a loose surface where the tires can break traction a little?

I've had the same problem before but it eventually came out. Don't know what to tell you....

Had this problem with mine as well, more than once. Would usually go off after turning the truck off and back on. I think I read somewhere where there is a problem with the switch (soldering) and that it was a cheap fix ($50 or less).

It is one of the most common problems with those trucks. The switch on the dash is bad. There is also a switch that engages the 4 wheel drive motor that may be bad too. Keep turning the truck off and on and each time drive it a little. I have spent over $1,500 in just switchs on an 05.

Souldnt you be able to pull the fuse by chance? On some it has a connctor on the transmission you can unplug and plug back up. Ive heard of them going out before.

My 2004 did that all the time a few years ago. I procrastinated in getting it fixed, so I dealt with it a lot. The best solution that I found was to turn it off, crank it again, put the foot on the brake and shift it from park to drive, back to nuetral and back to drive. Sometimes it would take several times to disengage, but it would always come out. It would shift real hard, but finally would let go. I finally got it fixed, and it was not expensive at all and works fine now. Sometimes I would have it in 2 hi and crank it the next morning, and it would start out in 4 hi. Just always had to keep an eye on the light.

I would try pulling the fuse, unpluging the actustor on the front end, disconnect battery?

My 2006 did the same thing yesterday. I got on the net and found a fix by removing the selector switch and re-heating the solder points on the switch board. It took about 10 minutes to fix. You can buy a new switch from GM factory direct for around $50.00 bucks if the solder job does not work. There is also two fuses that could be blown. One under the hood and the other one under the dash. I would try the soldering before buying a part. Simple fix that should be a recall. If you want to call me I will walk you through it. 662-871-2120 Lee
