Looking for a midwest hunt

Check out Kansas and Nebraska public ground. This late in the game, Nebraska may be your best option...don't know if KS has leftover tags (KS is draw). Nebraska has over the counter tags and good for whitetail or mulies. I've been to NE once and got my mule deer first morning. Folks are reasonably receptive to door knocking and asking for permission on private land as well.
