Shot the new 35 Whelen this weekend and.....

Postby Dutch Dog » Mon Nov 07, 2011 12:29 am

That sumbuck kicks like a friggin mule. I can honestly say I have never being kicked by a gun that hard...even the 3.5" turkey loads out of the Benelli. It is the only gun to cut me above my eye with the scope. (2nd shot) and the 4th shot literally broke the scope. (Tasco world class) The crosshairs are all distorted and something (sounds like a glass sphere possibly) is loose internally. My shoulder feels like you punched me several times, and for about an hour after shooting it I also had a pretty bad headache. (only shot it 6 times) The bad part is that I now have to buy a new scope and start that process all over again. Tell me again why I bought this gun??? I will have to say that after the first shot I thought to myself that wasn't that bad, this might be alright (buzzer sound) wrong answer.

Dutch what brand and model is it? I purchased a 35 in the cva apex last year..... 25 in stainless fluted barrel.... It was pretty rough! After a box at the range I told myself that I didn't deserve that kind of brutal treatment... I sent the gun down to Mr. Billy Tierce and he braked it out for me.... I'm 6'2 and 180 lbs, shoot a 10 gauge for turkey and didn't wanna deal with it without a brake..... Mr. Billy done a tremendous job as he has done on my Boone and Crockett 300 wsm and I am getting ready to send my short trac tO him..... Ill tell you how much of a difference it makes..... Gonna let my little lady (5'2 and 105 lbs) shoot it this weekend.....

I've got a TC Pro Hunter and don't notice the recoil.

It's a Handi Rifle, 200 gr Hornady Superformance bullets. Tell me more about what the guy did to it for you to reduce recoil.

i have the following stock on mine, me and dad shot ours yesterday about 10 times each. its no worse than a 30-06. and we are shooting pretty hot reloads.

i think the pistol grip stock helps.

i know its ugly, but it is really comfortable and functional.

i had a buffalo classic that i rebarreled to .35 whelen, and it was cheaper to buy this stock, rather than a grind to fit but pad.

i have the handi and an encore. The recoil on them are about the same. after a few shots it will wear on you. I had the handi in a 45/70 and I think the whelen kicks worse than the 45-70.

I just finised my load development for my CVA elite stalker. Have shot it 46 times so far. This is my second set of rings on it and the scope still slids a hair in the rings. I have a bruise the size of a cantelope from my bicep to the top of my shoulder. I rang a 8" steel gong four times in a row at 460 yards earlier today, I'll gladly take the pain for that though.

He pretty much just threaded the end of the barrel and builds a matching muzzle brake for it that screws on the end..... He has put em on a 243, 270, 308, 35 wheelen, up to a 300 ultra mag..... It does wonders..... I'd be glad to let you shoot it if you are close..... Kosciusko/vaiden, or Quitman/meridian.....

Most of your high recoil rifles need some type of "friction" tape inside the rings. This will eliminate your scope sliding problem. As for breaking one.....Low quality optics maby. If its a major brand you should be able to send it back. Some scopes just arent built to handle that kinda abuse. Better rings like Warne or Tally should also help in the sliding problem.

I went from a .35 whelen to a .35 rem. And its a world of difference...its actually fun to shoot an alot more forgiving..and cheaper ammo...pretty accurate also!
