New Slate/Pot

Postby Blackduck » Thu Feb 24, 2011 9:40 am

I need a new slate or pot call. My old one is aluminum I think and pretty worn out. Well not really I just want a new one and after packing the old one around for 15yrs I think I'm entitled 8)

Anyone have any recomendations? Striker recs as well. I like the woodhaven mouth calls (Thanks Gordon) and was thinking about their acrylic faced call.

What say you.

i recently started using yellow yelper calls from rison, ar.

the best slate call i've ever put a striker to and his glass is a close second..

his mouth calls are top notch as well.

Look at the Strut Busters!!!!!!!!!!! They are awesome calls. Glass on the front and slate on the back. A fellow in Macon, Ga makes them and you can get them at Mid-Western Turkey Call supply.

Woodhaven makes GOOD stuff, I have the cherry chrystal and it is sweet, also picked up a Hook's bronze glass at the NWTF last weekend, got it scuffed up and it will flat out sing (it isn't as pretty as derby city, etc, but it sounds nice). All of the calls mentioned so far are nice, and I love custom calls, but check out this guy, used to go by "Morgan" on the MDWFP forum, he's probably still around the new place, makes a FINE call:

As far as striker, get up with Dad's custom calls http://www.dadscalls.com (they make a good call too) and get a Monkeywood striker...no better order two, I think you will have to call to order them, but they are the best striker, HANDS DOWN I've ever used, it will run on ANYTHING!!!

thanks guys. All good help. I'm trying to update the call selection.

BTW Dad doesn't have any more monkeywood. Atleast on his website.

Also what do yall think about aluminum. It is a bit deeper and I like that but most people I know use slate or crystal. Whatever a "crystal"is :?

Blackduck, call Dad...he had one left the last day of nwtf and I should've bought it, but he said they are gonna turn some more. Crystal and glass are sharper in pitch and I like that, and the ones I have produce a more pronounced "rollover" and purr and kee kee more easily than slate...but, slate produces nice soft tones. Get one of each!
