Something I never thought I'd experience....

Postby Deadeye » Mon Jan 31, 2011 8:44 am

I am a father of 2 girls... girlie girls. They love going to the farm and riding 4 wheelers, swimming in the creek, etc... never has one said "dad, I want to shoot a deer." I've taken them hunting before and they would sit and watch the deer with me but always said that deer were cute, etc...
Over the summer, both of them starting shooting my .22 and got pretty good with it, so they've been introduced to a gun. I decided to hang out with the family this weekend and do whatever they wanted to do until my oldest, 11 year old said, "dad, will you take me hunitng? I'm ready to kill a deer." We couldn't load up fast enough and head down south. All the way there we talked about ethical hunters, shot placement, renewable resources, population, etc...so she understood our role in the food chain.

We get to the house stand at 3:30, it's 70 degrees and there were 4 doe in the plot... I had to bump them out so we could get settled. She was so anxious the whole time. Some turkeys came out and I had her put the crosshairs on one and stay on it. See how still and steady you can keep the rifle... this child has never fired a high powered rifle. She keep telling me that she was on the turkey and was ready to shoot. So we waited and at 530, 8 deer walked into the plot... my heart was racing and she was nervous, excited and about 50 other emotions. So we let them separate and for her to relax... we picked out the deer and she stayed on that one. Once she told me that she was on it, I kept whispering... sqqqquuuueeeeezzzzeeeee the trigger. She'd say, I'm scared I'm gonna miss.... I'd tell her there's no way you can miss if you simply steady your shot and squeeze. I kept waiting for the muzzle blast, it seemed liked hours. KABOOM..... I was watching thru binocs and knew she hit the deer... it ran in a circle about 10 yards from where it was standing and fell like a sack of taters. She foreever more put the smack on this deer... perfect, center mass shot. I can not tell you as a parent the happiness/proudness and pure elation that I felt... I was so proud of her. We took plenty of pictures and made a dozen phone calls and celebrated with a stop at Jerry's fish house on the way home. I think she's hooked for life on the joys of hunting and what it can do for the soul.

Now, if I can just get this child to bait her own hook, I'll be in good shape.

tell her congrats and when she has her own vehicle to drive, let me know and I'll make here a pink deer hunting sticker for free :)

I had found a shell frame at Stage one day. They also had the one for rifle cartridges too. Would be a good thing to put the empty brass in a frame and put it on your desk or hang it on the wall.

Congrats. That is why I love hunting so much. It has the potential to get families involved with each other.
