Record setting smallest Canada Goose killed

Postby Wildfowler » Sat Jan 08, 2011 9:19 pm

Me and a buddy dropped these two today. Does anyone who knows more about Canada's than I do happen to know which subspecies these are?

I don't think I remember ever even seeing any other specie of Canada goose in MS other than the nuisance variety. This was a surprise!! Same buddy and I were in OK many moons ago shooting lesser Canada's, but I'm not sure if this is the same thing or not. I really feel like these two were smaller than what we were shooting in the central flyway. Over there, they called them Prairie Cacklers.

I call em Cacklers. One was in with a flock of resident geese on my place in August. Tiny.

Those are Richardson's. Before they reclassified the Canadas into Canada geese and Cackling geese, the true Cacklers were found in the Pacific flyway, not here. Now, the geese yall killed are Ricahrdson's Cackling geese.

Some were killed near Morgan City last year. I had a group of about 30 in the field beside my house 2 winters ago. Feeding with specks.

We call them cacklers also on the Texas Gulf Coast. It's the only subspecies of Canada that we see on the coast.
