Pic a favorite.
I'm having trouble deciding which of these is my favorite. Their original size is 16 x 24 and you really get a lot more detail at that size, but I resized these for faster downloading on the web. All 3 have a quality I like and dislike:
#1 I like the sunlit conditions in the photo but kinda think the gator is lost in the shadow of the tree behind it. His face is illuminated and part of his tail and I think the sunlight makes the green weeds pop out of the picture.
#2 I like the angle on this one which seems to be a little lower. I also like how the overcast conditions (just a few minutes prior to the picture above) make this beast look black and powerful. But with the loss of light comes a loss of detail, like the catch light from his eye and the sharpness of the scales, etc.
#3 An entirely different gator in different scenery. The reflection on the water is my most favorite thing, and the missing leg is another. But this is a little one and doesn't seem to convey the power of the larger gators.

Re: Pic a favorite.
I rather #2. First one seems blurry and 3rd everything blends in to much.

Re: Pic a favorite.
I've got to go with the first one.
The gator in the other two is much sharper, and I agree with all your own critiques, but I think as a whole the first is the better shot. In the first the lighting isn't as good as the second, but still isn't bad, whereas the lighting in the third seems a bit too muted to me. The composition of the first and second is very similar, but there is something about the back ground of the second that immediately pulls my attention away from the gator. I can't quite pinpoint what it is, though. And in the third you've got great interest with the gator's reflection in the foreground, a great subject, but the interest sort of dies at the top Stumpy's back. All great shots, but I think all the elements are pulled together better in the first.

the first two are a little soft, so I will go with the third one.

Third - adds a bit more intrigue with the reflection. Great shot!

3 Rob.....no contest.
the 2 one has a soft face/snout.....and there's something about the first that just isn't right - maybe how it's composed???
3 is tack sharp and as mentioned that reflection is a nice touch.
just my 2 cents, mileage varies, justin

3,2,1 is how I would rate them. But I really don't wanna see any of them in the swamp when I'm there. Don't wanna end up with a nub like that 3rd little fella.
