From what I understand from one of the State Mgmt guys is MS has not banded enough of our wood ducks to establish a baseline. I think he told me in FL the woodie limit was 3. He also said that the state was working on banding more each year but lack of funding was holding them back. It makes sense though you can't establish a new harvest practice w/o having data on what you have.

I like the 2 limit. Think about the most woodies you might see on the best day, then compare that to the most mallards you might see on the best day.......100s vs 1000s. Also think about how many of these ducks you see everyday since they are local birds. If you see the same five woodies in the same spot for three days straight do you see 15 ducks? I can say that i have the same 6 woodies roost on my farm pond every day. I can't say for sure that i've ever seen the same mallard twice. sorry if i rambled, just a thought.
work hard, play hard
save the woodies.
Two is plenty, I would much rather see 100 woodies fall into my hole and only kill 2 than see no woodies fall in my hole and wish I could kill 4. Two in the hand is better than four in the bush. Watching is sometimes better than shooting. Conserve our resources. Dont be greedy.
All the southern MS Flyway states are trapping and badding wood ducks, even Ole Mississippi. Our hope and goal is to increase hunting opportunity on them as long as they can stand it. FL, KY and TN have had "experimental" early wood duck seasons for over 20 years with no problems. This early season has been in the form of a wood duck/teal season
There is no population data on wood ducks. It is tuff to count birds in the wooded sloughes as compared to counting mallards in the wide open prairies. We need to band a lot more.
