What is this?

Postby timbertalk » Mon Feb 01, 2010 2:07 pm

Had a guest at our camp kill this mallard hen this weekend. Banded in Maryland. We have called it in but they have not gotten back to us yet. We think this may be a gps transmitter, but we really have no idea. Any of you ever seen anything like this?

I'm pretty sure that's not a GPS transmitter but instead an identification tag called nasal disks... As in you band ducks but then you want to be able to tell them apart from a distance so you band them with different combinations of shapes and colors so you can tell individual birds apart.

I will let you in on a little secret. The band doesn't actually say where it came from. All the federal bands are made in Laurel, MD or at least the ones I have seen. The only way to find out where it was banded at is to wait to get your certificate back or to get online and look it up. I don't know the website off the top of my head but someone will post it. Get ready for a bashing but it is an honest mistake. :)

It is a nasal band or nasal saddle as stated above. Just another way of tracking birds from certain spots.
