Postby jkb87 » Mon Nov 30, 2009 10:39 am

ok guys.... doggy brought one back saturday that stunned me.... it flew in and i was thinkin a merganizer the way it just flew in and swam around and when it jumped up the other guy in the boat took it down.... when dog brought it back and i got real confussed..... didnt hava clue.... was thinkin maybe a inmature widgeon hen but i dont think thats right.... got back to the boat ramp and it made me feel better when both game wardens there could not id the duck either...... so we took pictures..... he sent me an email this morning sayin that his closest guess would be a ringneck hen.... but after lookin at pictures of the tips of the wings of the ringneck hen.... i just dont think its that either..... i have the pictures on email and if someone who could post them rather easy would post their email.... ill shoot em to u really quick.

thanks
If it wasn't for bad luck then i would have no luck at all........

Looks like and immature Redhead drake to me. The red is starting to come in around the edge of the bill. A better picture of the whole duck would be helpful.

from the pic i'd say either a imature redhead, or a ringneck cross, need more pics to be sure, but i'd also tell ya to ask the waterfowler, i think he has seen it all and would be willing to tell ya. if its an imature bird, look at the edges of the feathers and see if they have an unusual amount of wear, if they are not worn down, or do not have frayed edges, it would more likely be a cross, but if they are worn or frayed its just an imature bird
