Here's a homemade way outa an old trapper's book I've used in the past. Main thing it takes time and some daily effort to get good supple pelts. You don't have to stretch and cure/dry but most people do stretch and dry first. Although, you can put lotta salt on the skin side and wrap and wait few days and then start tanning. The salting aloows for all the flesh to be scraped off. Elbogen grease.
The second step is degreasing. This method uses naptha/Benzine from paint store rubbed on both sides of the skin then rub sawdust into both sides. Shake the dust out and rinse the pelt well in water.
If you wanta tan for buckskin or leather now you'd need to remove the hair by soaking the pelt in hydrated lime(co-op) and wood ashes in some water till the hair slips. You gotta scrape it off and soak in some boric acid (paint store)overnite to neutralize the lime. Lotta EG..
The third step whether, the hair is on or off, is to soak in a tanning solution. There are ready made solutions that can be bought but 4 oz. alum(drugstore), 8 oz. salt per gal water soaking the hide for a week stirring frequently will tan it. Use plastic bucket. Careful with the alum it draws things up.
Remove the pelt, let hang till just damp then rub neat's foot oil into the hide side and let it begin to dry. Remember you can "pop" your skins like a whip to get moisture off. During this process you gotta work it a lot stretchig and pulling to promote suppleness. .
You can go to the Predator Masters Forum and get info on some store bought tanning solutions if you'd rather...
Also, side note, the Indians said erey creature has enough brains to tan his own hide. They would take deer hides and stretch around poles and use the mushed up brains to rub into the hide and then scrape the hair off. The original "buckskin" with the amber color. Your buckskin from the home process would turn out nice and white, hair or no hair.
Later DL.
