Hollywood star Freeman injured in car accident
By Chris Joyner • chris.joyner@jackson.gannett.com • August 4, 2008
Actor Morgan Freeman was airlifted to a Memphis hospital Sunday following a single-car accident in north Mississippi.
Mississippi Highway Patrol Sgt. Ben Williams said Freeman was traveling east on Mississippi 32 in Tallahatchie County at 11:30 p.m. when his vehicle left the road, flipping several times. Williams said the jaw of life were used to extract Freeman, 71, Demaris Meyer, age unknown, from a 1997 Nissan Maxima before both were taken to Regional Medical Center in Memphis.
Freeman was the driver of the vehicle. Both Freeman and Meyer were wearing seat belts and were conscious when emergency crews arrived, Williams said.
“Both had some injuries, to what extent I do not know,” he said.
Kathy Stringer, spokeswoman the hospital, confirmed that Freeman had been admitted into the hospital and is in serious condition. Meyer’s condition was not known.
The Memphis Chamber of Commerce Web site lists Meyer as an employee of Federal Express.
The accident occurred five miles west of Charleston, where Freeman and his wife, Myrna, have a ranch.
The news shocked filmmaker Paul Saltzman who recently completed filming a documentary, Prom Night in Mississippi, with Freeman, who paid for Charleston High School to hold its first integrated prom.
Working with Freeman was a joy, he said. “We followed him and tracked the whole thing from day one,” he said.
The prom was a success, he said. The feature-length documentary is slated to be released in spring.
The Academy Award-winning actor is best known for his roles in Driving Miss Daisy, The Shawshank Redemption and Million Dollar Baby. This summer he reprised his role as Lucius Fox in the blockbuster hit The Dark Knight.
Freeman also is the part-owner of Madidis restaurant and The Ground Zero Blues Club, both in Clarksdale.
Staff writer Jerry Mitchell contributed to this report.

I heard from an acquaintance of his that he is doing good. He has a broken shoulder and arm, but is still under observation.

Re: Morgan Freeman
I just from a very reliable source that Mr. Freeman suffered a broken shoulder, and has a lot of bruising. This extra concern was a result of him bieng 71 years of age.
Re: Morgan Freeman
The news just said he had 1 serious fracture (displaced) and other fractures that weren't displaced. Displaced doesn't necessarily mean "open" or "compound", it simply means that the bones are no longer in alignment and will require setting by Doctors. In this case, they mentioned that he will undergo surgery later this evening and indicated the surgery was in order to repair the broken arm.
It's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.
Re: Morgan Freeman
How is "5 miles west of Charleston" near Ruleville?
Glad he is not in as serious condition as the news was saying.

Re: Morgan Freeman
The lady was a friend of Freeman's wife and himself who was from Memphis. The car that they were in belonged to her.
Re: Morgan Freeman
I just saw Morgan Freeman on Friday and Saturday playing golf at Dancing Rabbit and staying at the Golden Moon. Apparently he was there all weekend, as we were. Sorry to hear about the accident. Sounds like he is going to be OK though.
