what do you think they will weigh
Re: Building a pirogue **Pics Added***
I hope no more than 60 pounds.
For those of you who have one or have built one. Would you put a keel on it? Why or Why not?

A keel is for keeping the piroque tracking straight. unless your going on big open water, like sardis lake I would put one

I understand the purpose of them. Most of the time mine is in the water it will be on the pearl river and in some backwater that is covered in beaver runs. Just trying to decide thank you for the info.

I would like to build one with my son this summer. So keep me up to date with your project. We LOVE pics. This may be the last summer I've got before the skirt chasin' starts and I become a complete moron .

I will post some pics tomorrow. I have the outside done except some light sanding and painting. The inside needs 1 more coat of fiberglass, I also have to attach the gunrails on the sides. I hopefully will put her in the water this coming saturday. Will have pics of me either paddling or swimming.

I haven't done much fiberglass work but would it be possible to get MO breakup cloth and put it on before you do the last coat of fiberglass. and if so would that look good ?

I opt'd for a keel on mine...like all things.. you've got to weigh the pros and cons
the keel will allow you to track straight and paddle a little faster (as thrust of the paddle will propel the boat forward as opposed to twisting), it will also slightly slow down how fast the wind can blow you sideways.
But on the other hand if you are crossing many sticks and stumps the keel will protrude further down and hang up on some things that you may not otherwise.
If I had to do it again, instead of using one keel; I would use two. dividing the bottom into thirds. This would allow more surface area for dragging over logs, and even more positive tracking.
hope that helps
