Brad,
I have never heard of Asus. I would check the customer reviews pretty hard if you are set on one of these. Smaller companies may be hard to get a hold of for support if something happens.

On the transfering programs. if the old laptop is dead (will not come on, boot to windows, etc) you are going to have to get some help more than likely. You can save the data and some (not many) programs by taking the laptops hard drive out and putting it in an external enclosure (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817392009)or adapter (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16812119020) to hook it up to another computer.

For the most part, the programs will have to be installed on the new computer with the cd that it came on.
