Dingy- The persecuted Out Of Stater
Sturgeon are a curious fish so most people use some type of decoy; anything from wood fish to bleach bottles, coffee cups, cds, etc. We usually use a pink flamingo. This is a picture from a couple seasons ago in 13 ft. The white bars are down so you can see a fish swim over them in deeper water or when the water is not so clear. Some people actually have fish come up to the decoy and bump it...then they jab it.
We didn't use any decoys this season because it was so shallow. So basically we were just waiting for one to swim by. Some people go years, tens of years, without getting a sturgeon or even seeing one. I tend to think those folks stare at the bottom of a beer can too much.

Back to the question about the eggs. Some lucky turd speared a 158lb female today. Here is a report. Notice the amount of eggs in that sucker, 50+lbs! Imagine that on the black market...
Sturgeon Spearing Report for Wednesday February 21, 2007 Total registered harvest today was 34 sturgeon, including 14 adult females. A harvest of 53 more adult females will trip the 90% season closure trigger.
Thanks to the fine cooperation of Bill Nelson, the young man that speared the 158 pound sturgeon on Monday, DNR Fisheries staff were able to thoroughly examine the fish Monday evening and gather some valuable information. The fish was a 158 pound, 74" adult female and was in an F4 or black egg stage of egg development, meaning it would have spawned this year in 2007. The total weight of both ovaries was 54.8 pounds (34.7% of the fish's body weight) - in other words the fish was carrying 54.8 pounds or an estimated 1,273,000 eggs. The fish has not been aged yet, but will likely be older than 50 years and could be older than 60 years. The stomach and digestive tract was collected and will be examined for gut contents and parasites by Dr. Anindo Choudhury of St. Norbert's College in DePere who is an expert in sturgeon parasites. Seldom do we get an opportunity to so thoroughly examine such a large fish - this is the 8th largest on record from the spear fishery since 1941 - and thanks again go out to Bill Nelson, his dad Steve and the rest of the family and relation that were on hand during the examination Monday evening at the Nelson home.
