If you had to choose between early season & late season

Postby Goat Roper » Wed Aug 15, 2001 12:32 pm

Looks like my first duck hunting venture to the great State of Mississippi will have to be either during the first couple of weeks of the season or the last week. If you had to decide, what would be your recommendation. I will be hunting near Calhoun City. (I can hardly wait!)

Well, if you look solely at the last couple of years, its impossible to tell. Last year, there was a lot of success before Christmas, and it slowed down. Before last year, it was after Christmas. All depends on the weather, and you can't predict that right now, so just flip a coin. But most people would say later is better, but you really never know.

The weather will be the controlling factor. Some of our finest hunts in north Mississippi have been between Christmas and New Years. Had one truly fine day two years ago on the last day of the season. Good luck on your trip to our great state.

duckks will be based entirely on weather conditions... we had a great first two weeks, then a lull in mid-season with the freeze up and a great late season shoot... i think Vegas would give the best odds in late season... at least all the birds are in full plume and are a sight to see... good luck...

I would say late season, the odds definately are better for seeing lots of ducks.
Enjoy your trip to our beautiful state.

GOAT ROPER- You might as well flip a coin and quit worrying! It's all a matter of chance. Welcome to the great state of MS.

Goat Roper,

What are your ties to Calhoun City? My dad is from Slate Springs (about 14 miles from CC).

Well, I base my hunting success on weather reports, hatch counts and water conditions..evaluating each based on previous years' records and take into account how much available food is out there , the dewpoint/temperature spread for the week prior to season and moon cycles...then I make my final and most important decisions using the eenie-meenie, miney-moe method.

Goat Roper:

I hope that you are going to come to Mississippi after your trip to Reelfoot Lake with CCO.

If you do, maybe we can hunt together at Reelfoot and then in Mississippi.

Calhoun City is not far from the Delta...

Thanks gentlemen for your replies. I know that hunting is like farming (I grew up on a peanut farm) it all depends on the weather. Think I will save that great trip for the last of the season. You know, I have met some mighty fine folks in this duck hunting world and I really enjoy the fellowship with all. Have a GREAT season and enjoy our many blessings. THANKS!
