The "gage" reading at different points along the river refers to the current level from 0 which is mean lower low water or like the lowest "level" in a 100 or maybe 200 or so year period. At 0ft. on the gage, the ACOE maintains a 9' navigation channel so the M.V. Mississippi that I am doing a stint on now because of a manpower shortage(they needed a 1st. mate till the one recently hired can get out here) draws 9' or less at any given time depending on fuel and water load and can navigate safely. My ship that I normally work on, the U.S. Dredge Wheeler, Can not go above Baton Rouge as the "deepwater channel" ends there(50') and we are too tall to fit under the US Hwy. 190 bridge(thank Huey Long for that you Ms. guys) and we draw 22' aft light and 30' fore and aft loaded. So 0' lowest expected and 43' flood stage is what the river and it's easements can hold without spilling out into "low lying" areas such as bottoms and agri. land as based on the Vicksburg gage! Google the two vessels I named and there is info on Corp websights. Also, go to the corp website in Vicksburg for more info on the gage and for 5 day forecast. I think Micah has a link to river stages on the startup page of this here site!
